Me using Win XP.

Today morning when I woke up, the comp had restarted and there was this message syaing "Hard disk not detected"

I just checked all the connections. And then it worked fine.

I came back from the gym and nothign was working. The screensaver was supposed to be running, but there was some error message for that.

I open Foobar and click on a song, it doesnt play. But it can seek ahead. But it just stops. No playing whatsoever.

Windows Media Player works.

I try opening My computer, and all the icons on the desktop including the Taskbar disappear and reappear after a few secs. If I go to MEdia Player and then say "Open file", the same thing happens.

Right now, using my mom's laptop.

Any suggestions ?? I have some critical data on my hard disk which I just cant afford to lose. I simply cant lose them. So, formatting and reinstalling the OS is not really an option right now.

Any way of connecting my hard disk to another laptop's USB port ?? OR is buying an external casing my only option ??

best option you have already stated there. second should be get it attached to some one else's PC and download to HDD or CD.

You can also try with XP liveboot CD where you can use ur USB drive too.

Yeah boot with a BartPE disk or something.

Backup all your files on C drive to your other partitions.

Reinstall XP :)

how about borrowing a hdd and installing xp on that and then connect this as a slave

would recommend that you cancel any disk checks for this hdd if any prompts of that sort come up

1.connect ur laptop and desktop using a lan cable if ur xp allows u to do atleast this much..

2.try using safe mode if regular doesnt work..

3.get a usb case for ur hdd and then connect to laptop and copy..

What is BARTPE disk ??

And if I reinstall XP, any danger of my other drives being affected ?? The last time I tried this, I ended up formatting my entire hard disk.

The critical data is only on D drive.

Safe mode doesnt work.

I have a Wi-fi network at home, but Windows itself it not loading...so, no way to transfer the files to other systems.

ok... I now have a problem. I need the Via SATA drivers on a floppy. My Asus mobo CD has a Makedisk option. But this laptop doesnt have a floppy drive.

Anyway to get around this ??

I ran seatools yesterday. Both, the long test and short test did not show up any errors. So, I assume the hdd is fine.

Ok, I found the SATA drivers on a floppy. It was in some corner of my computer table.

I spoke to the guy from whom I bought the comp. He said he will give me an IDE HDD (80GB). I can then install the OS on that 80 GB HDD, boot into windows, access my 160GB SATA HDD, transfer all critical data back on the 80 GB HDD, then disconnect that.

Then install XP (with formatting only C Drive) on my normal 160 GB SATA.

Any flaws in my theory ??

Will I need the Sata drivers again for the IDE hdd?? I have an A8V deluxe. Will XP setup directly recognise that 80gb IDE HDD ??

As it turns out, I do need drivers even for the IDE drive... Right mow making a floppy disc using a USB floppy drive from my dad's lappy.... Hope it works this time...

I managed to install XP onj that spare 80 GB IDE hdd.

Now, it boots into windows. I connected my usual 160 GB Sata hdd...but it is not showing up in MY Computer !!

What do I do now ??

I am right now formatting D and E drives of that 80GB hdd.

But how do I access the files on my Sata hdd ??

The IDe is now connected in the same channel as my DVD-RW. That is the only wya I could access it and install XP on it.

My Sata drive is connected to the Sata port.

Do I need to install the Sata drivers ??

After taking backup, I disconnected the IDE HDD and tried installing on my SATA HDD...

Again, Win XP Setup isnt recognising the HDD.

Even if I hit F6 and insert the floppy with the drivers, it is not being recognised. The floppy itself is not being recognised.

Setup says "insert the hardware supplied disk into Drive A: and press enter".

I do that and hit enter. It says "please wait" and after a few secs, comes back to the same screen. "insert hardware supplied disk...... "

what the hell do I do now ?
