On May 13th,2005 Microsoft made an announcement to "Deliver Automated, All-in-One PC Health Service for Consumers" .Well its out now , as OneCare (sort of reminded me of the Tablet PC's flagship product "OneNote" ). If AntiSpyware and virus removal tools is what the game was till now, this is the first time Microsoft will be looking at posing in the Anti-virus sector directly with the complete package. The question remains however if it will be included in Windows Vista

These are the features of Windows OneCare which is going to be released in its Beta version :

1.Defense against evolving threats.
Windows OneCare will provide automatically updated anti-virus, anti-spyware and two-way firewall protection.

2.Performance and reliability tools.
PC owners will be able to choose to have Windows OneCare automatically carry out periodic maintenance tasks such as disk cleanup, hard-drive defragmentation and file repair. The service also will offer boot-time information and proactive support tools to help improve the customer experience.

3.Backup and restore capabilities.
Windows OneCare will enable automated backup of files by category on CD and DVD, along with the option to back up all files on the system or only those that have changed since the last time the action was performed. If files are accidentally deleted or corrupted on the PC hard drive, the service is designed to restore saved versions or map them on a new PC

4.Simple, integrated service experience.
PC users will have one simple point of reference for checking the overall health of their system. Windows OneCare will automatically notify users of available updates or other recommended actions and enable users to easily act as needed. Otherwise, the service stays quiet and in the background.

I think MS will bundle it with their Windows OS for FREE!
and tat will mean serious competition for Symantec and McAfee.

but as a standalone product, i doubt it will reach the heights so soon ;)

Awesome ! I think Microsoft has really decided to beef up security after launching SP2 ! The integrated firewall does a pretty good job, and when coupled with AVG makes a good pair indeed !

AFAIK, anti-virus packages works best when they work alone. When you try to make a pair out of em, they creates problems ;)

hi,

good to know microsoft has taken up security seriously. This would certainly beef up the competition in the market, but, then again, will this be free or one will have to pay to enjoy the pleasures of using onecare..
