Windows Phone 7.8, the much awaited OS update to the old WP7 smartphones is finally available for download, unofficially at least. If you are okay with downloading and flashing firmwares on your own, then continue reading this post. If not, read it anyway. Who knows, you might just get interested and do it (and in the process get the latest WP7.8 OS for your smartphone, tada!).
Windows Phone 7.8 on Navifirm

Android Central reports, and quote:
One of our eagle-eyed readers caught the Lumia 900 getting in on the action. The OS update is for RM-823, which is the international, non-AT&T version and has an OS version number of 8858 with the 12480 firmware. Windows Phone 7.8 is finalized at 8858 making this a bonafide official update.

As you can see, the update is for the global version smartphones, and is not limited to the Lumia 900 only but the entire range of first generation Lumias. The firmware has been uploaded for a range of carriers in various countries such as India, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland as well as for the unlocked carrier free Lumias in Europe. We are looking at a mass upgrade roll out. The official roll out should happen soon, as the firmware is already uploaded and ready on servers waiting for the go!

However, there's some disappointment waiting for you. A user updated his Lumia 800 to WP7.8, and this is what he's gotta say:
Updated Lumia 800 to 7.8.

-Resize Live Tiles.
-Bluetooth File Transfer.
-More Tile Colors.
-Increase in number of Nokia Apps.
-Slightly Better Reception and Battery Life though 3G Speeds inconsistent.
-Some extra options in Settings.
-Extra Security Options.
-No Change in Camera.
-Contact Share & Contact Transfer Updated.
-Ringtone Maker App.

It seems that this update doesn't pack many of the Nokia exclusive features that were being planned (earlier leaks say there's more for Nokia's Lumia lineup). Well, we can only hope that Nokia releases an update somewhere in the next few weeks (hopefully not months) with those promised features.
