To be quite frank i hardly keep anything on the desktop.

Why not keep stuff organized in files and folders.

use Docks + StackDocklet addon to access files that u require frequently.

Or

Use the multi tabbed Object Dock Plus if u want it on the desktop.

Dont keep multiple files on the desktop itself , looks crappy.

Since you're such a Linux lover I'd suggest KDE4 with it's "Folder View" plasmoid (desktop widget), which looks like it can handle icon grouping (add multiple widgets to the desktop then add icons in them)...

Group files into folders, add folders to the task bar..just click on then to access the files in a jump list sorta view..

I just installed Fences from the Stardock site which fulfills my needs nicely. Thanks for the inputs guys.

+1. it's better to organize programs, games and documents in a folder on the desktops.

infact Ive hidden all my desktop icons .Just using two docks.one for most needed softwares + My comp, control panel etc. and other for all my games :P

I don't feel the need for a mostly blank desktop. To me that is just wasted space but I guess its just imo.

i was about to suggest you the same. this is an awesome free app to arrange desktop icons. i wish there was something like it which could be used within explorer as well... (if anyone knows about existence of any such app, please let me and everyone know!)
