Hi Friends,

I am using windows xp with service pack 2, Mcafee Antivirus + Mcafee AntiSpyware.

I had a virus problem in my system, these virus are running in background by name regsvr.exe and new folder.exe. Now I have cleaned all these virus and I am getting a new windows startup error stating "windows cannot find regsvr.exe and Make sure you have typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file click start button and click search"

Please help me out how to fix this problem.

Disable regsvr start up entries by running msconfig from run exit without restarting.Delete At1 task from scheduled tasks. Now go to Group Policy by running gpedit.msc or what ever you feel easy.Move on to users configuration-Administrative templates-system look for “prevent access to registry editing tools” and change option to disable.Further Go to registry editor by running regedit and search regsvr.exe .Delete all entries related to regsvr.exe.

1. make sure u have ur windows restore feature turned off and then u do the cleanup or else it will restore the same from the windows restore files.....

the files would be most prob. located in these locations

c:\I386
c:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePakUninstall$
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
c:\WINDOWS\ServicePakFiles\i386

with the name regsvr.exe.vir make sure u have enalbel file extension in windows for the same.

remove all "Viewpoint" programs from add / remove programs.

do you have impotent data on your windows drive ?Actually you have to delete some *.exe files also during the period of infection by searching..

^^

@raja.. check under start > programs > startup or run lavasoft ad-aware once.

Open registry editor (type regedit in the run box), Navigate to entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

See the entry Shell = “Explorer.exe regsvr.exe” on the right side.

Modify this key and delete the regsvr.exe from it. The value of the key now should be only “Explorer.exe”.
