Windows unable to complete dskchk

One of my friend's system is not performing disk check. He asked me, but I don't know why? So i am asking you guys here. What could be the reason? What's the solution?

Error message is "WINDOWS UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE DISK CHECK"
 
May be due to dying hard disk....Check HDD in HDtune SMART and bad sector tests.If nothing wrong then might be due to virus infection/corrupted data.
