Because of these dramatic changes to the graphics system, both NVIDIA and AMD have had to spend significant time redeveloping their graphics drivers to work with the new Windows Vista operating system. Both NVIDIA and AMD (and ATI) have been working on Vista development for YEARS and we have been hearing claims of having the best "Vista Support" from both camps nearly as long. But now that the day of redemption is actually here, who will come out on top?

I decided to take the retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate, got the latest drivers from both AMD and NVIDIA as of Friday and began to spend my weekend testing. What is important to note here is that my intention is NOT to compare the ATI Radeon cards against NVIDIA GeForce cards -- rather it was to compare the gaming experiences provided by ATI and NVIDIA on both Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Should gamers worry about upgrading to Vista right away or should they wait for drivier stability and performance to catch up with the Microsoft vision? Read on to find out.
PC Perspective - Windows Vista Gaming Performance - NVIDIA and ATI Compared

i know its too early for a comparison since R600 is not out yet but just thought it will be appropriate to post it since vista is officially released now.

from what i saw, XP>vista with regards to games

and another links says vista breaks over half the games

too big a price to pay for 'dx10'

The problem i think is that the drivers are not mature yet. once they will then we will see performance of xp and vista will be same. just a speculation though.

The latest drivers show that XP and Vista dish out equal performance and sometimes Vista gives a good boost as in BF2142 and sometimes it lacks as in FEAR (for ATI I mean), but overall the performance is even. However this is with Core 2 Duos, with single Core A64s the performance on Vista is much lower.

I have faced compatibility issues but only with the less known titles. Also, there are compatibility issues with OpenGL.

But rest assured if you have a Core 2 Duo, Vista will give you a similar gaming experience for a good number of games.

AFAIK Vista is a lot lot more stable to use than XP as an OS. Only rarely does Vista ever hang if ever.
