Window's Vista??????

Plz post in right section... Mods plz move it ;)

Coming to topic it 1 choice I use Ubuntu and am pretty hapy while shifting for Xp to Vista is meant only for gamer if you are not a gamer :bleh: stick to Xp ;)

I dont agree mate.

Vista is far better than XP in every sense. People who have just seen it working somewhere wont say this, but ask anyone who is using Vista for a month or two and has the hardware, it rocks. I have been using Vista since September last year, right from the beta to the retail version. Its awesome.

You will find many people who will bash Vista and say all kinda crap just because they dont like it or its from Microsoft, but they will still use it. I dont want to comment on such people, but I sincerely request these people to stop crying over the price, quality et all, coz they are not paying Microsoft anything to demand anything in the first place. As far as the price goes, Microsoft has poured billions of dollars on this product which wont run more than 3 years coz, so they eventually have to earn!!

I think this will attract a lotta flames, but this is what I think. No offense to anyone.

I have the hardware and have been using Vista for 3-4 months now

After the initial charm wore off, I think I prefer XP ...

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd have reverted back to XP

i think it all depends.

if you have the matching hardware, then its really good experience. even then, if you compare, on same hardware, xp will definitely give better performance and stability.

vista has just arrived and is full of bugs and all, which will be corrected with time, while xp has become matured after 5-7 yrs, so pretty stable...

and there is nothing in vista that u can not get from other softwares on xp...

may be you can dual boot and use xp as your default working station while install vista on another partition to just enjoy it as i do...

Coming to think of it, the moment I upgraded from ME to XP, there was no turning back, even on hardware that barely ran XP (a P-III 550 with 192 MB of RAM)

I turned off the graphical effects of XP just to keep that running, it was that good an upgrade....

With Vista, its a love-hate story (actually more hate)

Disclaimer: All my machines running Vista are a lot better than MSFTs recommended configuration for Vista

Love

- The spotlight clone feature (real time search): Though nowhere as good as Spotlight, the Vista Search is infinitely better than XP search

However, I hear that Google desktop on XP is also fairly neat

- The somewhat improved battery life on my laptop which went up frm arnd 3 hrs on XP to 3:30 on Vista with aggressive power saving settings

Hate

- The much annoying constant disk thrashing

- Lack of drivers for some hardware(should improve with time)

- some programs/applets are painfully slow (like Network and sharing center)

The most annoying thing abt Vista though is this...

There are times when Vista will be inexplicably cranky and behave weirdly

Things which would have worked fine the last time will sometimes refuse to work-randomly

and this can get very annoying when it happens

It's hard to explain but I'll just give you a few examples

- Stuck copy paste operations 1 in 10 times (esp while copying over network)

LOL...this will typically happen when I am in a hurry and just need to grab a few ..files on my lappy from the b**ch rig and run out

- Cranky hibernation which takes Vista almost as long to resume from hibernate than a restart (not always, but sometimes)

-DHCP troubles on every nth resume (n=5-10)

And so and and so forth....

XP felt much more user friendly and almost as stable as a mainstream Linux distri like Mandrake

Vista feels maybe a little more user friendly (?) but the crankiness is a big killjoy

@Justin, rightly said dude :eek:hyeah:

Absolutely Vista is just "Old wine in New botle" A bit of eye candy and n00bs get baffled :bleh:

well iam not a noob & i say the same thing to XP now which i had said to Windows 98 after XP had launched that XP is a crappy piece of junk :bleh:

so guys use vista with the right hardware then talk or else SHUT UP

P.S. I have used Vista Beta 1, Beta 2, RC1, RC2, RTM & loved them so much that i purchased the Retail one so you guys can take my statements very seriously :)

Vista is worth it from every angle :hap2:

two words: bad install

as these things never happened with me "touch wood"

Have u used Linux :S No naa use it and u can customize it gr8 ly even better than vista , using vista is just like spoon feeding a child you get everthing at your door step then what's the use of brain :p See how I configured ma Ubuntu

just a few coding and bingo I hit this without using Berly/Compiz ;) Though I installed a dock too but appearing black without Berly :bleh:

Note: Vista cost 10-15 k + gr8 hardware which can make holes in your pocket while Linux cost nothing so worth a try :)

Nahi re...

Two Installs..One genuine, the other "ahem" on different machines (my XPS and desktop) seem to be plagued by the same problem so can't be a bad install

so guys use vista with the right hardware then talk or else SHUT UP

Using with the right hardware...

- A CoreDuo lappy with 1 GB RAM and Go7400

- A Winnie 3200+ deskto with 1 GB RAM and GF 6800

None of the configs are top of the line but both go over & above MSFTs recommended requirements

I wouldn't avoid Vistal like the plague ( or Win ME ;) )but would not recommend it either

Edit:

Wow..Ubuntu sure looks neat ythere...Mind writing a small guide DarkStar?

:bleh: All current game supported by Cedega or Wine .. Ya this let you play latest game :) on Linux ;) The game that run in Linux in my knowledge are NFS : Carbom,Oblivion, BF 2142 and all :) supported by these software :);)

If u have the money to get new hardware (or already own new hardware) and have the money to buy Vista Home Premium/Ultimate, then its easily better than Vista!! Even better if u r a power user and even better if u use some of vista-only features!!

I was part of beta testing Vista and have been using it since close to last 2 yrs... I think its a good upgrade over XP!!

@Dark Star,
Linux = no gaming :bleh:  :p

using via Cedega or Wine will reduce the performance ;)

and ya i like everything readymade as iam very lazy to configure the looks

I second that... None of those happened to me with the Vista and current updates. Mayb you've had some driver issues or ur installation is bad!!

Its only in cedega 6 that gaming has improved... Dx9c games have just begun to work and still they are pretty slow. I do most of my coding work on Linux, but then Linux still isnt close to being good for gaming!! The best part about Linux over Windows is its free.... but u cant say that about Cedega... can u??

No .. I can't say that Cedega 6 is better than Windows games :) But the points is cost :S See cedega cost $17 or something like that just mere a cost of a game .. and will not cost you as much 10 k like windows does isn't it ? :p But is gaming everything ? See due to my low system specification I did not game but . my mind is now totally diverted from gaming ;) Instead of gamin learning OS is what I prefer.. I am not saying Windows is bad but at least people should get aware of that the myth of Powerful Os i.e "Windows" is not true at all .What windows give user. Ease of Use. + Gaming and all and what Open Source gives up the power of customization .. a way where we can use our brain more than windows ,though its a bit hard but its not impossible to learn ! :D Open up your mind get Tux :bleh: get addicted ;)

1 more vote for vista!

IMO its a worthy successor of XP.

The disk thrashing happens during the first week of the install as the indexer indexes the files on the computer.

After indexing is completed,if you have sufficient RAM (1GB atleast) there won't be many significant disk accesses except when the OS boots up in which case, the prefetch data is loaded into the RAM.

Three things I find which makes vista very worthwhile are

-Search
-prefetch
-GUI

I won't called it worthy successor even M$ knew this, that's why they started working with Vienna :p Well Vista project wasn't started after the release of XP.. Xp was a blockbuster hit ;) While Vista won't be :eek:hyeah: Just a set of new skin . tumbnail view , Aero . 3D flip did not make a new OS :bleh: I won't shift back to Windows until Vienna arrives and shows a mighty presence
