Heres another interesting highlight :
The Commission ordered Microsoft to sell a version of Windows without its Windows Media Player audiovisual software but the two clashed over a suitable name.

The Commission's order is meant to open the market for alternative software to play films and music, from RealNetworks, Apple and others.

This version is entitled to be distributed in Europe ,after the legal issues concerner with MEdia player.

i did not understand the fuzz by EU regarding this.
Noone is gona buy a mediaplayer from any other company when they can download lots of free mediaplayers including a WMP10 for free anyway.

It would have been better if they forced M$ to bring out a version of windows without IE & Outlook.

well there was yet another court case involving the unbundling of IE .i guess outlook will be the next to come under the microscope.

Making Microsoft sell Windows XP won't have much difference as any one can download the Windows media player separately and continue listening to music. It would've made more sense if Apple or Real had make their music players free for full use; otherwise, even the Windows XP N users will revert back to using Windows Media Player only, 'cause it's free and moreover it plays most of the popular file formats.

i think for either player to come up 'king' they need to do one of the follwoing :

1)have a user friendly digital copying facility
we shud be able to transfer legitimately withou hassles of copyrights, etc . some cd and dvd roms coming up in the market can detect copied music and files.so here being uptodate with tehnology hurts the user's prospects.

2)interoperability
between each other and among other platforms and playbacks.the first person to 'allow ' sharing with their format .this is where itunes i think loses out a lil but.

3)compression baby !
it all comes down to bandwidth and speed ,so i think whoever comes to an agrrement with the divX dudes stand to get popular vvery fast.

Yeah, IE and outlooks are biggest headache for me. But I have my own custome made stripped down Windows XP CD from which I have removed IE and outlook and also all other languages except English and Hindi. I removed all other useless services, integrated popular hotfixes and SP2 and made a CD which is only 411MB. thats more than 100MB less than original windows XP.
nLite rocks :D
