I've got a genuine Windows XP OEM license installed on my current computer, an Athlon 2000+ of 2004 vintage. I am now planning to upgrade to a more up to date computer. I've read many articles on the Net stating that it is impossible to move to a different computer with an OEM version. Is that really the case or is there some way that I can legally move the license from my old pc to the new one?

Worst case, if I have to buy a new license, what's the current price of XP Home?

u got org key na ... then when u get the set up call the microsoft ppl up. plead to them that ur pc crashed this that you got new pc . and stuff . they do then sometimes let u use the same key. the activate it via phone or something. hehe.

take a chance.

Just do a search for the cd key used on your computer, you can download utilities all over the web which can find it for you. When you re-install use the same cd key, if you get a message saying you have to call MS, just call them and tell them you installed a new hard drive or something, and they will re-validate your key for you.

XP Home is around 3.6k atm. Call Microsoft India and get your copy activated once it's installed on the new system - one thing they never ask you is whether you have an OEM or retail version, and there's no way to tell that based on a CD key. I have a retail copy of XP Home which I had a call a few times to activate because there is supposedly a friggin limit even on retail copies - but MS never makes a fuss when activating over phone.
