Windows XP screwed. What to do ???

I think my windows XP installation is totally screwed up. I suppose virus also seems to be one of the reasons.

Here are the symptoms

1. Windows starts and after the loading it shows desktop and then the screen blanks for a minute and then restores back. This happens usually everytime.

2. I cannot go to command prompt. I do a CMD and then command prompt comes but closes itself after some 5 seconds

3. I usually keep the taskbar at 2-3 levels so as to accommodate more windows. But just out of the blue while i am still using the laptop, the taskbar goes back to ground level and also the theme of the machine changes to classic.

4. Get rundll32 etc etc system file error which i dont understand.

5. My avira antivir DOES NOT have its guard enabled. I cannot enable it either. It is greyed out.

How can i rectify all these issues. My netbook does not have a optical drive but i do have win xp setup on a bootable USB. I tried running the setup directly from current installation but i think it did not give me option of repair but directly install / upgrade.

Its a virus/spyware thats the problem...

Try installing another antivirus... or boot into safemode and then see if you van enable Avira and do a virus scan...

You can even try to run an online scan from > housecall.trendmicro.com

If everything else fails, then get an external optical drive and reinstall windows :P

enter safe mode, and try system restore. But even system restore might be disabled. So first check whether system restore its enabled, then run it in safe mode. But the behaviour of your pc seems to be very mysterious and i have little hope whether SR will be able to solve this issue. Anyway you can try it . If system restore is disabled or doesnt solve this , then the only way is to re-install windows.

Just use your usb xp disk to format that partition and re-install windows. But before that you should use some other bootable disk (like win vista or win7 or active boot disk or hiren's boot cd ) and delete the system folders (like recycle bin, system volume information, etc) from the other partitions. By doing so, you can ensure that the virus/spyware isnt resident in those areas and your newly installed OS will be safe...

Do it and report back..

Re installed windows XP on my machine.

Installed Spy bot Search and Destroy and avira and kept all scanning including windows firewall on.
