WINE is an extremely popular emulator for Linux based OSes to run Windows programs. WINE has been around for quite a while and it's compatibility and stability is very good. But have you ever thought of tweaking the purpose of WINE? Instead of running Windows applications and programs on Linux on your laptop or PC, why not port WINE over to ARM so that you can run Windows apps on your Linux based Android smartphone?
WINE for ARM, i.e. Android
You read it right, WINE is indeed being developed for ARM architecture. At the recent 2013 Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, Alexandre Julliard, developer of Wine showed off his works on the abstraction layer for Windows on Android.
However, this abstraction layer is in very early stages, and is "horrendously slow" and hence unusable for any practical purposes at the moment. But it does open up an entire box of possibilities when WINE for ARM starts working with usable speed.
WINE for ARM is a WIP. Needless to say, any update on this would be covered.
