Netgear router or Linksys? I've heard that the netgears have long term issues and are less customizable( less customizable being a plus point as me = noob to networking:P)

USB or PCI adapter at the other end ? the two systems are diagonally on the opposite sides of the house and on two floors, so i need all the range i can get.(judging by the big antenna's on the pci's , i guess they'll have more range)

I'm not getting wired lan as I've waited for 3 months and wired lan has still not happend. the electrician is just way too lazy. the idiot just wont show up. :@

hence me going wireless :) I'd appreciate fast replies as I'd like this done today itself :D

purpose, internet sharing, and the occasional file transfer

how much speed should i expect ?

Buffalo wireless whr-hp-g54 ... it is not expensive... has awesome range, and you can choose to use better firmware and customize it. :)

i use that and its awesome!!

[OT] @ pixelpusher, can you give me a link for a better firmware to increaze range of this router further? [/OT]

I've used both Linksys and Netgear. The Linksys WRT54G and the Netgear WGR614, to be precise. Both are pretty decent. The WRT54G can be flashed with third-party firmwares for more extensive features and stuff. The Netgear is pretty stable. No connection drops or anything. When it comes right down to it, I guess you could pick up whichever is cheaper in your area since they're both pretty decent.

As far as the adapters go, I'd recommend USB adapters over the PCI adapters.

wrt linksys line, and Buffalo whr line, both use the Broadcom chip... so pretty similar... but Buffalo tends to have better range.

Here is Link to dd-wrt, a great firmware alternative :) I have not tried Tomato, but people seem to like it, I think (from what I can tell) dd-wrt is a little more popular. It does seem to have more customization, and tweakability options.

@ pixelpusher, can you give me a link for a better firmware to increase range of this router further?

There are some settings in dd-wrt that can tweak the range a little and are supposed to help, but I don't know how effective.

You could also try bridging 2 routers to extend the range, using a 2nd router with Wireless Distribution System in dd-wrt.

WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is a Wireless Access Point mode that enables wireless bridging in which WDS APs communicate only with each other only

LAN-type WDS

This is the easiest, and currently most common, type of WDS used for linking LANs. It is very simple to setup and requires no extra routing protocols or knowledge of networking. Simply put, it is pure bridging. A simple example would be extending the range of an existing AP by setting up a 2nd AP and connecting it to the first using LAN-type WDS.

and one of the best option i like in DD-WRT is Schedule Reboot under Administration Menu . Put Router to Reboot at 2:10 AM and enjoy free downloading automatically .

the WRT54G was a v7, with an atheros chipset ,cant be flashed :(

oh well, at least it works , hey wai...

linksys WRT5G v7 it rocks i had no issues in setting up also but one thing u have to update the firmware of the router before setting up this can be done by goin to linksys.com i have excellent connectivity at ma place
