Worklog : The Wooden Home Server

I think it would be better to have the 120mm in front rather than on top :)

Or...put the 120mm on top of mobo area, and add another 80mm behind the hdd for a push pull config :)

Does your psu have its intake fan on the bottom or on the front?

AMD Athlon X2 4200+

Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H

512 x 2 DDR2 667

Seagate 7200.10 500GB (x 1 for now)

300W Generic PSU

No wait!!

Anish, is that the 74GM??? That implies it is the 740G chipset featuring the ATI 2100 IGP;

If u have not bought that yet, get it changed to the 780G which's a lot better;

Heck this one doesn't even sport the 7.1 channel, 6 3.5mm sockets at the back; :)

Anish what have you decided to use as the structure for the cabby...

Blockboard

Plyboard

MDF

Solid wood panels

or Wooden framing with Plyboard/Acrylic filling in between

Also it would be easier for you if have a old cabby lying around. Get back area of it for your wooden PC. The PCI cards mounting would be so much easier and for the mobo tray if you are not using acrylic then use the mobo tray from your old cabby.

Also i remember watching a really neat desisgn somewhere for a wodden PC... Maybe you can take some inspiration from it... Let me search it out for you...

Here it is..

Got it off bit-tech

I had the 780G option Gannu, but there wasn't a single board with my needs i.e. DVI/HDMI out AND Co-axial SPDIF (Cause this will go to my Marantz straight).
Anyways board bought and running fine for my application :)

Switch, the cabinet is made fully out of Plywood of varying thicknesses for different parts.

@ bottle - Nice find! Anyways, I thought about including the inner frame from a used cabby, but since I wont be adding any PCI/PCIe cards, I won't be needing the support.

As for the fans, I'll experiment with different configs and pick the one most suited. The system doesn't need much cooling TBH, so a big priority is silence.

Okay here we go :

She's off to get some acoustic dampening now with the interiors being fully coated with foam.

For the exteriors, well not decided for now, but I may go for something like this to match my HT setup :D

Here's a :devil2: so that ppl dont keep an eye on the enclosure;

Awsum work Anish; :thumb:

For fans, do consider the right balance b/w the cfm rating and noise; :)

Hey, it can float too! Just make it water proof and leave it in your swimming pool with wifi connection enabled. Hmm what about power supply? Maybe pack big UPS too :P

man its gonna look amazing ..once it's complete done:O
..especially the brushed chrome finish will look like a high-end HTPC cabbie

 hehehe...
by the way what exactly will be the work of the home server ..and what all connections ?
will it be connected to a screen\monitor 24 X 7 ?

now my list has another attraction in goa .Anish's PC and speaker setup ;)

great work with the cabbie so far. but im kind of worried about your plans for the brushed chrome film. What was the point of using wood in the first place if youre going to make it look completely different at the end of it. you might as well have used a regular cabinet and filmed her up.

Ofcourse, then again theres the whole diy aspect of the thing and hence youre using wood and not for aesthetic appeal. But do consider just sanding her down, a couple of layers of polish. Im not sure about varnish though, the stuff we used in carpentry class made everything look cheap. There are probably better varnishes out there though that are just for protection and have no effect on appearance.

This suggestion could be pointless, because im not sure how well sandpaper works on plywood. Anyway, the point being that if you really want this thing to stand out, leave the wood as wood...much classier. Sheesh, i feel old. :D

Keep us posted.

great work thr....

I finally got my IDE HDDs....so i fired up my old PIII system....now i plan to build a small home server too....

i thought of making a wooden cabinet too...but when i actually calculated the cost of makin it to buying a el cheapo cabby....it came out to be more....with out HDD enclosures and a no ATX plates....

so i am thinking of getting the cheapest cabinet i can get my hands on....

Here is a my doubt..... won't it be better to use a normal cabby for the job

its not about the cost...or the home server....its about making your own cabinet.

i have a project goin on of making a own cabinet since 6 months....super delayed due to my job and well work on diff home projects.... guess making another cabby would be fun....but looking at my previous project i want to just start the server and be done with it.....

24x7 Download/Upload Rig, NAS, HTPC, Print Server, for now. :)

I do stuff like adding torrents and file transfer through Windows Remote Desktop, but it is connected to my Hitachi incase I want to use it like a regular PC. Check the connection map below.

I understand. Even I wanted to use wood and varnish it nicely. The initial plan was to use pure teak to get those grains out and get that classic look. But I simply wouldn't have matched with my existing AV room and would have looked out of place. Having spent fortunes on an equipment rack made of stainless steel (I'll upload pics later), it made no sense to use wood.

And your right, the DIY part was very crucial. I have to admit, I had more fun designing it than making it ;)

Why I used wood? Simple, its the easiest material to play around with which is rigid, lasts long and gives you lots of flexibility :)

P.S. - Can some mod please move this to OC & Modding? Thanks!

More pics!!

Getting her foamed up!

The foam being cut to exact dimensions and measurements.

The foam was glued on with Fevicol. Here's the attached and dried job.

Fan assembly (For the hardware whores) with a really hard to find 70mm x 5mm (Dia) screw+nut

Two screws were enough to get a rock solid fit thanks to the precise drilling work :)
