Microsoft has finally launched their (and Nokia's last hope) Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system. While WP8 was already covered earlier, it comes now with a few new features and extra punches. Let's have a look.
Microsoft Windows Phone 8
Microsoft's WP8 is a big leap over WP7. Sharing the same NT kernel as the Windows OS on desktops, WP8 is Microsoft's champion against the iOS 6 and Android 4.2 might. Announced yesterday, WP8 has evolved and brings some new features to the table since last time.
Live Lock Screen Wallpapers
WP8 will support Live lock screen wallpapers. This is in addition to Live Apps, which can update in real time and push information to the lock screen. Now, even 3rd party apps will be able to do the same. You can cuztomize whether you want your Facebook updates or live scores for a match.
Windows Phone Store has 120,000 Apps
The Windows Phone Store (formerly Marketplace) was once criticized for being low on apps. Now however, the App Store has crossed 120,000 apps which is quite good. Even though miles away from the 700,000 iTunes store apps and 600,000 on Google's Play Store, it's a start in the right direction. After all, one can argue it's the quality and not the quantity. That is the approach Microsoft is taking. WP7 apps will most probably run directly on WP8.
New Facebook, Twitter, Skype Apps
WP8 is getting new Fb, Twitter and Skype apps. Facebook has always been a big push for Microsoft since WP7 (which showed in it's tight and brilliant integration into the OS). New apps bringing new features is only great news. The same goes for Twitter. We can understand why Skype gets the special treatment too (Skype tightly integrated into the OS, Microsoft's purchase of Skype).
Overall, it all looks great for Windows Phone 8. Now all we need are affordable handsets. We have already covered the HTC 8S and HTC 8X here.
