XBMC or Media Portal ?

I have recently joined the htpc bandwagon and slowly building on my htpc rig.

I am currently using XMBC windows version 9.11 and loving the interface and functionality, moreso becuase of its support for MCE remote which makes life a lot easier.

However I am facing certain issues while playing mkv files, some 720p movies stop playing in the middle and goes back to the file list and refuses to play. Only when I skip that particular part, the movie resumes. The movie plays fine on other media players and a little artifact is observed at that timestamp, so I am assuming that there is a slight encoding error on the movie which makes xbmc crash. This becomes a little annoying when you are watching a movie.

So I wanted to know from other XBMC users if they are also facing this kind of similar issues, also if 1080p performance is as good as mpc ?

If the issue continues, then I might have to take a look at media portal as an alternative.

XBMX has been working rock solid for me. Hooked it up to my 40" screen. Config is E6300, 2GB RAM and 7900GS. Plays 720p and 1080p with equal ease. You must be having some other issue. :)

Are you using the windows version or Live ?

I will have to check with more mkv files, but till now it happened with 2 720p WiKi files.

BTW, I have ordered the Rii Mini from DX after your review, hope it gets here, keeping my fingers crossed. :P

^ I've been using the Windows version, not the live one. I never really explored the DSPlayer part but now having a look..

PS: Congrats in advance on the purchase of the remote :D

I am sorry, i may be off topic. But I am curious to know what exactly is XMBC. Is it application like windows media player or what? Would be nice if some body can give little idea....

Is XMBC better than the Win Media Centre, if yes, HOW?

Secondly, as i am using Media centre I am not able to flip the browser as shown in this video link in Windows 7. Pls also tell me what would i have to do in order to make my browser flip like this:

YouTube - Media Browser for Windows Media Center HD

I was also using Windows 7 MCE before, but the reason I was looking to switch is because subtiles don't appear in Win 7MCE. I tried all sorts of tweaks and programs, but to no avail.

I tried XBMC and was impressed with the overall appearence, functionality and customizable options, plus it has inbuilt support for the MCE remote which was a boon for me.

You can try the Windows version of XBMC, its about 48mb and installation takes seconds.

However I was facing issues playing mkc files with the current version, don't know if its an issue with the files or my hardware. Right now I am using the version with dsplayer.

i use xbmc live on a 2gig usb stick - with my zotac ion and my panny g42

xbmc live is much better than going the windows way especially for a crisp and lightweight install

What changes did you do to make XBMC live read NTFS partitions ?

My earlier issue of XBMC 9.11 crashing seems to be because of only some particular mkv files, its playing other mkv files just fine.

Anybody using any movie catalog/database software with xbmc ?
