Yet another thread on Xbox 360.

Hi

I am in a soup.

I have ordered a Xbox 360 HD drive from US. Infact Il be picking it up today.

I am planning to buy the Xbox 360 console from India locally this week. Now I am worried if Il be able to even connect the Xbox 360 HD drive to the PAL Xbox console.

They say the driver/setup disc which comes with the HD drive will be NTSC and so cannot connect to PAL consoles.

I am stuck...

Will modding make it Region free?

Many Thanks

Vijay Nair

modding does not make the games region free. so it is unlikely that it would make the movies region free. ill try n see if i can find something.

Thanks Stormy... I need to buy this in 48hrs...

1. I can go for the PAL console, but then will my HD Drive that I got from US be wasted?

2. I can get modded NTSC console and probably connect seamlessly to the HD drive...BUT...no playing Indian region DVDs then right?

Why is this so tough...Damn...:(

dont know the exact answer yet.

but if you use a ntsc drive on a pal 360 i dont think it will be wasted. i think it will play on ntsc region hd movies & not the pal movies.

why dont you mail microsoft & try to find out. google is giving very random links with nothing clear.

HD is region free...

Just that sm people say I cant get the drive to even detect on an Xbox 360 PAL edition.

btw got the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive now....Trying to get it to wrk on PC for the moment...Its recognized as Toshiba HD Drive...All the links of driver hacks for PC have been deleted...Now downloading drivers thru torrents...just 2 seeds :(

Works with my PC. As smooth as silk...Now going to try on my lappy and connect to the plasma :)

But I still am not sure if I can connect this to PAL Xbox 360...

You might run into problem with your lappie. Non HDCP laptop gives blank screen here. ( a year old Dell 1700 series).

This drive is suppose to work with any Xbox from what I have read. PAL/NTSC should not matter. Just update the HD DVD software on xbox using xbox live after initial install and you should be ok to go.

You can try it on someone's xbox if anyone you know has 1 or a shopkeeper which will allow you do test it before purchase ;)

Here are some questions (and answers) about the Xbox 360 HD DVD player that people have asked on the Xbox.com forums.

Q: Will the HD DVD player upconvert current DVD titles ?

A: If you use component cables, the player will not upconvert DVD titles. If you connect a VGA cable between the 360 and the TV set, you can upconvert your DVD titles to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p - depending on what your TV supports

Q: What resolutions can the HD DVD player play back HD DVD titles at ?

A: If your 360 player is connected via component cables, then you can play back at 720p or at 1080i. If you have an HDTV which supports 1080p over component, then you can view 1080p from your 360 via the HD DVD player (but no upscaling of other content mind you). If you are connected via the VGA cable, then you have the option of displaying HD DVD titles at 1080p. AGAIN - this is assuming your television set supports the resolutions in question.

Q: Will the HD DVD player play back regular DVD titles?

A: Yes!

I have mailed MS regarding my Xbox 360 HD DVD player compatibilkity query...Hope they reply soon.

I got reply from MS, sounds cliched...

Hello, Vijay!

Thank you for writing Xbox Customer Support!

I understand that you have some questions about the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player and the Xbox 360 console.

Vijay, I apologize for the inconvenience, The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is for use exclusively with the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. With regards to your issue, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Players and the Xbox 360 consoles are designed for use in the country or region for which they were manufactured. We do not recommend that you try to use an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player in a region for which it was not designed due to the following reasons:

* Game regions and DVD regions can be different in different geographical regions. Game content or movie content that was made for one region may not function correctly on an Xbox 360 console that was manufactured in another region.

* Power voltages can differ in different countries. Conversion devices exist to enable foreign power supplies to work with local voltages, but these devices vary greatly in function and capability. Frequently, these devices do not work with high-power devices such as desktop computers and Xbox 360 consoles. In some cases, these devices can damage. If you use a power converter and the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is damaged, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player will not be covered under warranty.

* Television standards can be different in different regions. Therefore, local televisions may not function correctly with an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player from a different region.

Game Regions:

* NTSC: North America and South America (United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil)

* NTSC-J: Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan)

* PAL: Europe, South Africa, India, Australia, and New Zealand
The lower-left corner of the package indicates the game region and the DVD movie playback region that the console supports.

DVD regions:

* Region 1 - United States, U.S. territories and Canada. Part Number X08-25387

* Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland. Part Number X08-25402

* Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore. Part Number X08-96288-01

* Region 4 - Mexico, South and Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean. Part Number X08-25597

* Region 5 - Russia, Eastern Europe, India, Africa excluding South Africa, North Korea, Mongolia. No DVD Movie Playback Kits are sold.

* Region 6 - China. No DVD Movie Playback Kits are sold

Anyways, I am taking the HD DVD drive to a place that sells the modded Xbox 360 and connect it....Lemme check how it goes. Will also play some DVDs.

What region are the movies that we rent from DVD rental centres? I have a feeling they will play on NTSC. Will report back.

many rental outlets which have extensive collection of hollywood movies have imported Region 1 DVDs. Most of the movies never make it to our market. SO these guys import them and rent here.

Thanks Funky.

I got another reply after I repeated the Q: Will I be able to connect to a PAL console and they gave a very detailed reply of connecting without specifically addressing my issue :(

Maybe it doesnt matter if its NTSC or PAL with the newer consoles...

Hi Vijay!

Thank you for writing Xbox Customer Support!

Thank you for your inquiry! I understand that you are trying to set up your Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player along with an Xbox 360 console.

The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is exclusively for use with the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system.

Before you can use your Xbox 360 HD DVD Player with your Xbox 360 console, you must follow these steps:

1. Install the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player software. Turn on the Xbox 360 console, insert the software disc that was included with the player into the console, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

2. Position the HD DVD player. You can position the HD DVD player horizontally or vertically, just like the Xbox 360 console. However, unlike the console, the HD DVD player has rubber feet only on the horizontal base. Therefore, the HD DVD player is more stable when you horizontally position the HD DVD player. Do not position the HD DVD player so that the cooling vents on the HD DVD player or on the Xbox 360 console are obstructed. Never change the orientation of the HD DVD player when a disc is in the disc tray or when the HD DVD player is turned on.

3. Connect the HD DVD player to a power source by using the power cord and the AC power supply that are provided. To connect the HD DVD player to a power source, fully insert the power supply cord plug into the back of the HD DVD player. Firmly connect the AC power cord plug to the power supply. Firmly connect the other plug on the power cord to a standard wall outlet. Connect the HD DVD player to an Xbox 360 console

4. You can connect the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to any USB port on an Xbox 360 console by using the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 cable that is provided together with the player. To connect the player to the console, follow these steps:

a. Connect the USB cable to the mini-USB port on the back of the HD DVD player.

b. Connect the other end of the cable to an open USB port on the Xbox 360 console. If you use the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter, you can free the rear USB port on the console by connecting the wireless adapter to the back of the HD DVD player instead of to the console.

You do not establish a wireless connection between the console and the HD DVD player when you use this method to connect the wireless adapter. However, this method does maintain a wireless connection between a router or a second console and your console as long as the console remains connected to the HD DVD player. You must use a USB 2.0 cable to connect the HD DVD player to the console.

5. Configure the display settings of the console to view high-definition content. To view HD DVD movies in high definition, you must connect the console to a high-definition TV or monitor and you must configure the console for high-definition video output. For more information, see your Xbox 360 Setup manual or visit the following Web site: Xbox.com | Support.
Electrical safety:

As with many other electrical devices, failure to take the following precautions can result in serious injury or death from electric shock or from fire. These hazards can also damage the HD DVD player.

1. Select an appropriate power source for the HD DVD player.

a. The power input for the HD DVD player is 12 volts at 1.7 amps. Only use the power cord and the AC power supply that came with your HD DVD player or that you obtain from an authorized repair center.

b. Even if the voltage and frequency of an alternative product appear acceptable, do not use non-standard power sources, such as generators or inverters. Only use AC power that is provided by a standard wall outlet.

2. Avoid damaging the AC power cord. Follow these guidelines:

a. Position the power cord so that people will not walk on the cord.

b. Protect the cord from being pinched or sharply bent. This is especially important for the part of the cord near the connections to the power outlet and to the HD DVD player.

c. Do not jerk, knot, sharply bend, or otherwise abuse the power cord.

d. Do not expose the power cord to sources of heat.

e. Keep children and pets away from the power cord. Do not allow anyone or anything to bite or chew on the cord.

f. When you disconnect the power cord, pull the plug. Do not pull the cord itself.

g. If the power cord becomes damaged in any way, immediately stop using it and call Xbox Customer Support to order a replacement cord.

h. Unplug the HD DVD player during lightning storms or during storage.
