Hi Guys,

I have a modded xbox and i got to know that with the help of xpmc we can use as media center....
I don't have much knowldge on this and i am afraid of bricking my xbox :( ..

Can some one help me out to convert me xbox (currently gathering dust) to a useful media center machine.
In summary:
------------

What I want:
-Backup my xbox games to the internal hard disk
-Run all audio files and xvid movies present on my comp--> xbox ---> TV
(through ethernet connection)

Help required:
- How to do it? is it possible?
- Do i need to buy the remote? if yes from where i can buy it?
- Any thing else which i can do...except installing linux:P

Thanks!

Do you have the original Xbox or an Xbox 360?

I can walk you through on what to do with the original. You can play Divx, rmvb, KVCD, mp3, mp4, mov and just about any audio/video format under the sun directly off a DVD or Xbox's HDD. No need to have network cables all around the house. You can also install much larger HDD than the 10 GB one it comes with.

Oh and you can also play Nintendo 64, SNES, NES, A2600 etc games directly off the hard disk with emulators. I am not sure but I think PS1 games and Dreamcast games are also do-able.

Regarding the 360 it has Divx inbuilt now, sadly modded or unmodded you cant use the dsik as a back up.

Hey thanks ...
4 info:
I have XBOX, not XBOX-360
(not till now, but i have PS2 also which is in my closet from last 1yr ; just got GOW2 so, soon it will be out to rock ;-).

really interseted to know how to change HDD n run all the videos ;-)
(can I use 500GB HDD???)

I think 120 GB is the most the Xbox can support. Not too sure though as I installed XBMC on mine over a year ago.

There are two ways of doing it.

1 Use FTP with a computer. Its complicated, plus the software (Evox Dashboard etc) is hard to find so not recomended.

2 Use an Auto installer. Like Slayers Evox (google it). What you basically need to do for that is burn the installer onto a RW CD or a RW DVD and put that into your Xbox restart and it will do the rest.

Will post further details tonight as I am off to work in a while. BTW what kind of a chip does your Xbox have. What does it say when you boot up?

I installed my apps using Slayers Evox installer. I think I still have the CD. If you are in Bombay, I wouldn't mind lending it to you.

It installs emulators for N64, NES, SNES, XBMP,XBMC, No-Remote DVD player.

I do not stream stuff to my xbox so I can't help you there. You can change a file in Slayer's Installer and give your XboX a desired IP [192.168.0.5 for me - Hooked up to the LAN] and use FTP to move stuff to the HDD. Alternatively, I use a Rewritable CD and just play stuff off it.

Dude its very easy, just search for Slayers Evox installer or the best one which i like Auto Installer Deluxe, just pop the dvd in the xbox and u are good to every step is self explained if u know what they mean lol. Install XBMC as your default dashborad in F Drive of the xbox. Restart the xbox there u have it just pop it any audio/video dvd and u are good to go. wont play any HD files smoothly as the processor is what will make it lag.......
For network play, [i guess u know how to connect two devices through cat5 cable aka lan cable so wont go in detail]. connect u r xbox and pc. in xbmc go to settings type in the ip add say 192.168.0.2, below enter the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.1. and type in your windows xp user name & password. On the pc side [if u using cross cable] enter the lan card ip as 192.168.0.1 and subnet as 255.255.255.0 thats it. just share any folder on your pc. thats it u are done.

For the HDD u can go upto 2TB but its all based on the modchip u have installed in your xbox. A generic mod chip will support no more than 120 gig.
If in mumbai do let me know will do it for you for a small charge........

Right! The evox mod chip is what I had as well. You have to hold the power button for about three seconds to boot into evox chip mode right?

I didnt use Auto installer deluxe (mostly because slayer was a smaller file to download) so I can't comment on it.

Slayers also has a lot of cool applications that come bundled in it like XBMC (which is installed as an application and a dashboard), the emulators mentioned previously, a very very handy utility that makes a backup copy from a DVD of an Xbox game so you can play it of the hard disk, a DVD player of course and some other HD utilities.

There are two ways you cant grab an Slayers auto installer. One is to go to their IRC channel and grab a link from there, which is what I did. Apparantly there is also a torrent on Mininova (which for obvious reasons I cant link) which I cant vouch for. BTW a torrent is also there for the Auto installer (but its about a GB as compared to a puny 300 mb Slayer one).

Download the Installer. If you get the Slayer one it will be a Passworded RAR archive. Go to Welcome to the Official SlaYer's XBox Installer Web Site to get the password. Extract the RAR file and burn the ISO you get on a RW DVD or a RW CD (it has to be a ReWritable disk). Use Nero or Alcohol to burn the dsik as an ISO.

Then once the disk is burned place it in your DVD tray of the Xbox and power it off and on (restart it). Instead of taking you to the Xbox dashboard the xbox will boot up in install mode. From there on follow the onscreen instructions.

But before you do all of that go here Welcome to the Official SlaYer's XBox Installer Web Site and download the version 2.7 manual in PDF format and read it. Make sure you have an idea on how to install once the disk is in the drive.

If any of the above sounds to vague let me know. Trust me a modded Xbox is about the coolest thing in my house and that includes the new Xbox 360. It is absolutely worth it.

Lastly if that all works out you wont need to stream anything. Like I said XBMC will play all the audio/video formats off the HD of the Xbox or off any DVD.

Still if you need to network and stream you will need a crossover cable. I dont think a normal Ethernet one will do unless you want to go through a router.

Hope it helps.
