Not necessarily. I'm using the phone OOB as is & haven't faced any issues thus far. Sure, there's heating but nothing too discomforting imo.
The popularity probably contributes more to the development rather than any issues that the device/sw may have. At least that holds true for the LG Optimus 1 P500. Not sure about the Redmi 1s.

To the others, my Miui ver is jhcmibf36.0 (Android ver 4.3 jls36c). Does that mean it's version no. 36?

Okay thanks. & I take back what I said about the heat not being discomforting. Just took a call after playing around for a while. & boy, did my ears meet some sweet music!

Update to 37 or 41 from the below links and there is some improvement in heating issue

Thanks for the help. Noticed that a ver 41 is now available for d/l on my device. So I'm assuming ver 41 global is now official. Will probably wait a bit more before updating though.
 
in now 41.1 3 ours passed :p

till going good now i want Mi 3 plz let me know if anyone want to sell :)

P.S For best miui exp one gb is not enough :( So need an update asap :p

Just updated to v41 offered OTA, will update this thread if there's any performance improvement

Edit- the update has improved RAM management, I have been using Flipkart eBook reader, Facebook, magic bricks, browser, Te app for last one hour.. Free RAM is still 350 MB.

Try playing some music in the background from poweramp or 8tracks and see if you face any force closes, alot of people including me kept experiencing this frustrating crash. Also see if you can have more than 9 apps in the multistasking window, there is a 9 app limit ... and somehow no one has addressed it yet.

My UPDATE History : V36.0 GLB to V37.0 CHina to V37.0 Glb to V41.0 CN to CM11 4.4.4 to V41.1 Now i wake and see already V43.0 is out :( (More then 2Gb plus data i downloaded )
