Xonar DX

Saw Greenhorn's interest in the Xonar DX. Will it be good for games AND music? A friend was searching for PCI-E based soundcards, hence the query.

Will these be wasted on the Audioengine A2?

music , yes. games , not sure. there is a battle going on. either way, no hardware acceleration. Shouldnt make a difference for vista

Why I'm interested is that this is a cheap budget card, and ASUS has put the money where it really matters - the Output stage (DAC and op amps i.e.) unlike creative which puts in Crappy DSP instead :P

I think they'll get along fine with those speakers :D

Of course , I'm buying it only if the price is right . thats after all, the reason I want it ;)

@greenhorn, check out these cards and prices on Newegg.

Which one would be worth buying? Are there other PCI-E sound cards available in India (no Creatives)?

Hmmm..

Asus seems to hav entered the battle in Audio cards industry as well..

Xonar range seems good..

Do check out Auzentech as well.. :)

Watever, no X-Fis.. Hate Creative eve since they dityched the poor employee.. :@

Was no employee. A user of Creative products doing what Creative should have been doing. Writing proper drivers and that too for free!

One of the reasons Creative's out of the pic in my queries :hap2:

PCI-E (not just soundcards) and Vista have issues.

Error message when you attach a PCI Express expansion chassis to a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008: "Code 12" or "Code 31"

Seems Creative aren't the only ones to botch things up once in a while ;)

The Prelude looks really good for the music+gaming crowd any way you cut it, but is pretty heavy on the wallet.

For the stereo guys, there are much better cards available at somewhat decent pricing - the Juli@, 0404 (that is still Creative, though), and the m-Audio Audiophile series come to mind. Auzentech has a few cards in that range too.

The Xonar looks good. I don't know what opamps they used but the CS4398 is used in some very good equipment both PC and rack, and it sounds really good if there is a quality chain following it. I do hope that they've not mucked up the stream in that lengthy list of DSPs and have an equivalent for direct out. I'll wait for comments from users for conclusive evidence one way or the other, as Asus has not been too forthcoming with information about the card's DSPs or how they are used.

and to answer the question which hasnt been touched upon yet...

Aurvana's not worth the price!!

you get much better stuff in the same price range from UE, SHURE etc...

@greenhorn, wow, that's some praise for the Asus! Going with the review, getting the SonarDX is a no brainer now :hap2: .

Soon as my rig is up and running, the Sonar will the 1st in line for purchase :hap2:! In the meantime, I'll suggest the same to my friend who actually wanted a PCI-e sound card.

Read the part where Asus sent a patch immediately for the problem with Bioshock...where does that leave you and ur pathetic drivers, Creative :hap5:?

@sTALKer, thanx for the info!

Is it possible to have both set ups as in a 5.1 AND a stereo setup without having to change wires every time? Or is it wishful thinking :ohyeah: ?

Thanx@greenhorn. All queries answered. Hadn't looked at that thread as I could offer no help nor was I interested in the topic. Big boo boo :ohyeah:

there is an IC by predatorvj on ASUS stuff, but he thinks people in india dont want to buy soundcards :S

Got info from naga that it would cost ~6k via KMD (he's planning to buy 2 )
