Last 15 days I am pulling my hair very few left :@:@ kids are after me.

XP pro sp2 kids computer

512mb ddr ram

onboard graphic

intel glad 845 (6yrs old system)

creative Live! value sound card

creative T3030 2.1 speakers

I mainly use kmplayer for playing 90% of multimedia content played on this computer & have been doing fine all these years.

Last 45 days ago my kids reported computer hangs while playing video & the sound goes off then the video freeze & computer needs hard boot.

1. My 1st guess was that CPU may have dust accumulated & heating up I cleaned up the entire computer, problem remained. CPU temp 33C-38C not so hot.

2. Now I assumed that the power supply is old & that maybe causing this freeze, so changed the cabinet (fronttech) along with power supply 400watts, problem remained.

3. Now it was time to looking to software side, so i upgraded KMplayer, problem solved & it was fine for few days & it appeared again now last 15 days.

4. The problem happens only when video content is being played not with the audio files.

5. so I installed Jriver media v14 that has the same problem, video hangs

Now the problem could be anywhere & my guess are as follows

1. creative sound card driver issue or hardware issue with sound card or may be teh speakers but why the hell sound comes back normal when i restart?

2. XP pro OS level issue once it hangs>I quite application the OS level sounds are also gone UNTILL I restart, then the sound is back to normal.

3. tried various video format all hangs so no particular file is creating this issue.

4.The freeze happens random not with every instance of playing the same video, but for sure it happens with video files only (the audio is lost)

5. HDD may have bad sector so to test I played a movie from USB drive & that too hangs.

6. dying CPU (6yrs old)?

Need help in trouble shooting where do I start?

Instead of trying another media player thus messing up codecs I uninstalled kmplayer & updated to the latest version, till now thing seem right the problem has not yet repeated but I am keeping my fingers crossed.
