XP showing some Glitches here.. Help required

Hi Guys ..

A problem which i had heard abt bt never encountered seems to have surfaced in my system.

I am running XP (SP 2) and was merrily surfing the net when i noticed that any window which i had opened actually was missing the 3D effect on buttons and the topmost bar of the window .. (i dunno if its called the fade effect .. )

i mean generally there is a fade effect on the windows bar which is missing..

also instead of lookin like buttons, they nw seem to look like flattened out things

i switched off the system (the comp got stuck on the saving the settings screen) nw wen i restarted it, it was ok..

bt now it is again here..

help me out on this pls ..

I dont know very much on this - this seems to be something Dipdude is more qualified to answer - but from my little knowledge this seems to be a problem with the themes - right click on Desktop and select properties and the first thing you see is the Themes page of XP. What you describe looks like the old Windows Classic Theme. Select the Default XP Theme in the drop down list and see if it helps.

spacescreamer, first try eazy's suggestion above, followed by -

type run/services.msc or control panel/admin tools/services, now check if the Themes service has started or not, if not, then double click - start. also make sure the startup type is set to automatic - reboot or logoff and try.

if your problem is not solved then post a screeshot of the same.

Thanks for the prompt reply ..

Guys smthin more stupid is also goin on ..
Lemme xplain Theek se..

Nw i started the comp to look for the solution on the forum ..
bt i frst started the Windows Explorer.. The window came up nicely and as it was supposed to show up.

Nw i start my Mozilla , and the same problem came up ..
so i reverted back to the windows explorer window to see if this thing was only occuring in the non system related application.. ( a loose term, bt u shd see wot i meant.. )
now i cud see in the back ground the inactive window of the win explorer which i had clicked..
Now the strange thing happened..
i was playing a song in winamp, it stopped and the explorer window now exhibited the same problem.

Maybe the glitch, when encountered , caused the music to stop ..

My fresh execution of the win exp, gives me a glitch free screen which again starts giving the problem
and i did tried the above given trick of dude.. the settings were already the same as mentioned.

Screenshot is given ..

can you close the winamp, and just try normal applications and explorer, are the bars fine then. and are using custom skinning applications, post a screenie of few explorer windows and ie etc, forget winamp for now.

ps : have you integrated winamp with explorer or something, if yes then take it out.

Right click on My computer> Properties> Advanced tab> Performance settings> Visual effects - play around there. But your problem seems to be due to something going off half way through. I womder if you have some sort of spyware which is affecting the perforrmance of one of the system services.

The problem as I see in your screenie is possibly that the default XP Theme named "Luna" is corrupted that is why you are getting the display problem... this Theme is located in the /Windows/Resources/Themes/Luna/ directory. If you can copy the files from another setup it may sort out the problem - I just did a copy and paste of a lot of my old theme files from a previous backup image and the restored themes work fine.

Maybe Dipdude can confirm this - I think XP goes bananas if its default font Tahoma is missing.

well

as i stated in the second post in this topic..

i too realised that maybe winamp was causing the problem..

and dipdude got my doubt strengthened even further.

u r rite dude.. winamp is actually gettin me this jitter..

i went into flash back , and recalled wen this problem came up frst ..

and i realised wen i was dwnloading and installing few plugins for winamp..

it seems that the toolbar plugin which i am usin for my winamp is giving the problem.

i switched it on and then executed mozilla.. the problem was there to see..

then i switched my amp off and clicked on a link in the already 'corrupted' mozilla explorer window..

Voila ..!! no more pangs here..

the window(s) which have gone flat still remains like that .. no revival for em .. :(

but y this is happenin/how , cant explain ..

Can any1 of u guys explain this ..???

ok, uninstall the toolbar plugin or uninstall winamp, reboot and see if all is fine. the toolbar thing seems to be incompatible with the xp visual style so time to say it good bye, next time becareful on what you install especially third party plugin's.
