Description
With both Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 nearing completion and already delivered to select experts, it is about time we see some benchmarking scores and comparisons.

The research staff at exo-blog benchmarked both service packs and while they were disappointed with the much anticipated Vista SP1, they were pleasantly surprised with XP SP3's unexpected performance gains.

The team benchmarked Windows Vista RTM (with no updates) against a fully updated Windows Vista SP1 version. Both versions performed identically in all tests except 2 where SP1 performed 1% faster in one and 2% in the other.

"Bottom Line: If you've been disappointed with the performance of Windows Vista to date, get used to it. SP1 is simply not the panacea that many predicted", the research staff concluded. "In the end, it's Vista's architecture - not a lack of tuning or bug fixes - that makes it perform so poorly on systems that were "barn-burners" under Windows XP."

On the other hand, benchmarking Windows XP SP2 against SP3 showed an unexpected 10% performance gain. Both XP versions performed more than 100% better than Windows Vista for the same tasks on the same hardware.

1. This has been discussed here before.

2. The tests are crap. They were performed in a VM, which is not a good indicator of anything. That doesn't mean that SP1 will increase perf (I have no idea), it just means that these tests prove nothing.

My bro's laptop has WinXP with SP1. It boots faster(at least seems faster with the desktop screen appearing quickly) than desktop PCs I've seen with SP2. And that's quite amazing because the laptop is really slow with a 4.2K rpm HDD. Performance is really bad for anything else. I dare not install SP2 on his laptop :P .

Installed sp1 rc1 of vista...its certainlt faster than rtm...and file transfers on network and normal are pretty much as fast if not faster than xp..

Only complain i stil have is that the UAC behaviour is still the same..could use a bit of refinement..(Even if there r changes, i couldnt feel them in actual use..)

yeXP :hap2: :hap2: :hap2:
It's not that Vista is totally crap but the problem with it is that it took bloody six year to arrive and still could not met with even a few basic expectations. In comparison, Apple is providing all the eye candy and aesthetic for last couple of years and that too without hogging hardware and without compromising on performance.
Come on M$ you can do better... :)

i vote for win xp hands down...vista still needs to look ahead...:S no offence to Vista lovers. wot i find sad abt vista :( is that it has improved tremendously on really advanced features which KingKrool mentioned in "Vista #1 big disappointment in 2007" thread but still relies on other softwares for a basic function even like copying..:S

The basic purpose of an OS is to manage an entire PC and vista still doesn't do that in the copying function........

I Hindustan times i read Vista to be a big failure in enterprise level organizations for Vista Basic is priced at 12,500 INR approx with none of the advanced features, Vista Home priced at 20,000 INR approx and Vista ultimate priced at 25,000 INR approx...and on top of that :S imagine a barrage of PCs with high end hardware...And Vista does not come with Outlook Express

Lets hope the situation improves for Vista in 2008 and becomes better like XP did with XP SP2..:)

+1 for the same, i certainly feel XP is far much better, stable and customizable then that of Vista (No personal feeling over here pls :bleh: )

The fact that SP1 doesnt boost vista significantly is that "Vista was made for stability and Not speed unlike xp" didnt mean xp is unstable but certainly less than vista :)

M$ stops support of XP in 2009. Oh you will get security patches but general support will be over.

What choice will enterprises have at that point ?

None, thats when you will see more migrations. Expect SP2 for Vista to do much more

totally agree with you, but it will be in future. As of today XP is certainly faster and stable then that of Vista, however, it's an testing and implementing kinda stuff. Once vista is initially launched, then SP1 is launched, then SP2 is launched and most of the bugs will be fixed, but on the other hand we'll also be running latest Microsoft Windows around the corner :)

Every Microsoft product follows the same fashion, Be it Win98 or Win2000 or over hyped WinME :)

Sure can, its on their website :)

I was speaking about Mainstream support being retired and not extended.

Code:
                             mainstream extended
Windows XP Home Edition 4/14/2009 4/8/2014
Windows XP Professional 4/14/2009 4/8/2014
