Is Xp3(windows xp service pack 3) is problematic ? I noticed a significant lag in booting and shutdowning of my pc after installing Xp3.

I also installed .NET framework 1.1,2 and 3.0, there is one or two programs running in background with .net framework name :(

I the only reason I installed xp3 to play GTA IV. Is there any any way around to tweak it ? Also does it affect MS Office 2007 ? Because when I was trying to uninstall it - is showed a message indicating that uninstalling it may create problem with Ms Office 2007

There aint any problem with SP3. This is a problem with third party application. As and when you update windows files via service packs, it patchs up the loop holes in your OS, which mostly likely your third party apps might be exploiting. And after you applied SP3 those loop holes are patched and those applications could not exploit it now hence degrading the system.

The solution to this is to uninstall that third party app.

Another thing that could cause this is you udpate your windows regularly but at the same time to complement this we never update our third party apps which start creating problem as and when your OS is updated. This really is again a problem of third party app. and not the SP3 or OS.

So the solution to this would be to update your third party app. with latest versions.

@tush: there are number of 3rd party softwares installed - how to identify the real culprit ?

I blamed Xp3 because after installing it - the slowdown started (which is only noticeable at bootime -rest its running fine)

You probably have a ton of stuff set to run on boot. Use-

Mike Lin's Home Page

Basically all one needs is the real time AV, anti malware, third party Firewall if any to run on start up. Cheers..

wil try that. I am using kaspersky license version and removed most of unwanted programs and services from startup. I will post the screenshot of background programs tonight

If you used msconfig to restrict startups, remember to revert that back to normal startup, before using startup CPL. :)

Well this is only if you used msconfig for selective startup.
Start>Run>msconfig
Select the radio button for Normal startup>>apply >>ok and reboot. :)

Sp3 is faster than Sp2 but it has got increased boot and shut-down time. no need to worry about it.

dude, I already installed and witnessing the slowness while booting

The easiest way is MSCONFIG. And even if you dont have it on normal startup there is no harm. Because as soon as you chose something to disable from MSCONFIG the startup type radio button will automatically shifts to Selective. Dont worry about it.

So now here is what you need to do.

Open MSCONFIG and go to "Startup" tab. Click the check box at the bottom that reads "Disable All". Once thats done, hit Apply and then Close. It will ask for a reboot. Proceed with it. If you see the boot time has decreased then you know what to do next.

Go back to MSCONFIG, Startup tab and select 1 or say 5 items at a time and reboot and isolate which ones are causing problem.

Hope this helps you.

Sure use msconfig as a diagnostic tool. Not as start up manager -Period.
Uninstall any app/program disable by msconfig, you'll end end up with crap in your registry hive.

Why don't you shift to W7 or even Vista ?

I will do that - but with 2gb of ram - I am bit hesitant to try that

@tush: thanks for ur suggestions, will try that

@sikvik: playing with registry is dangerous , better i will first check those unknown applications running at startup with the help of google before uninstalling them.

My answer was related to your 1st line.

Reducing startup items through msconfig will help you load your startup desktop and personal settings faster, but you cant get your windows booting to be as fast as it used to be in sp2.

^seems decent..

Btw im using windows Xp sp3 retail dvd. It had sp3 integrated in it.

So i just did a clean install and my windows is working perfectly fast.

(Though boot-time is slower than sp2 as mentioned)
