It really is the end for the Z series.

After two days of utter confusion over what exactly would be its future after the launch of the X series at MWC, a Sony executive has finally cleared the air. Jun Makino, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Sony Mobile had this to say to uSwitch:

I can’t comment on the future, but we will not be releasing a Z6. [The company is] turning to the next stage, with the Xperia X series.
– Jun Makino, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Sony Mobile

This verdict was reiterated in an official statement from Sony Mobile to Xperiablog as well.

The Xperia Z line has reached its culmination – Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of our product strategy. Whilst the Xperia Z series was all about bringing the best of Sony’s advanced technologies to smartphones, Xperia X series is based on bringing smart, adaptive Sony user experiences across camera, battery performance and hardware/software design.
– Sony Mobile

Farewell, then, sweet prince. This move does come off as a shock, for Sony’s perennial issue with the market had been recognisability — something it was finally achieving after persisting with the Z series for 3 years. Now, though, it’s all gone.

Makino also said that Sony is now focusing on “bringing the next generation of Xperia Series of intelligent smartphones”, reiterating that the Z6 will just remain a pipe dream.

For those of you out of the loop, confusion arose when Sony launched the X line of smartphones two days ago. The cause for confusion was that the highest-tier X series device, the X Performance, had specifications that seemed right at home in a hypothetical Z6. Naturally, this lead to questions about the future of the Z series, questions that now seem to have been put to rest.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that the Compact variants of Sony’s flagship always launch in fall. We might see an Xperia X Compact just yet, so all you fans of tiny, yet flagship-grade smartphones — hope is not lost.

Desp hoping that a compact version is still in the mix at Sony corp.

Not exactly sad news but anxiously waiting for what does X series have to offer!!
Even I was excited after the X series announcement as I am on the look out for a 4.7-5" phone. But if the german pricing is anything to go by then they are going to be over priced. Xperia X (with SD 650) @ €599 and Xperia XA (with Mediatek P10) @ €299. No pricing info about X performance but I'm guessing its gonna be at least €749.
One more thing, the higher X and X Perf do not get the vertical zero bezel design of the cheaper XA which is a shame.

I think I will have to cherish my Z3c for lifelong then.
Also the first batch of X series will be bug-full in terms of technology (what sony is gonna implement here)

So I will opt for 2nd or 3rd gen X series if the X series really stands par to the current Z series.

NDTV aired their MWC videos the other day. From a viewer POV I couldn't tell the difference between this X-series and their older Z-series. I think that the main reason for the change from Z to X was to get the media attention (which they certainly did). IIRC three models were announced: Xperia X (SD650 SoC), Xperia XA (MTK SoC) and Xperia XP (SD820 SoC). Good to know they come with Marshmallow out of the box. Looks like the XA will be their entry-level range competitor, X mid and XP high.
