The Hindu : News / Resources : Low Cost access-Cum-Computing Device Unveiled by Shri Kapil Sibal (PIB press release)

20jivco.jpg

The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Shri Kapil Sibal unveiled a low cost computing-cum-access device, here today. The price of the device exhibited today is expected to be around $35 per piece, gradually dropping down to $20 and ultimately to $10 a piece. Since this effort of continuous reduction in price and enhancement in capabilities would require a constant endeavour for R&D, IIT Rajasthan and some other IITs and technical institutions are setting up research teams to cover a wide range of issues in achieving our ultimate goal in terms of price and quality.

The three cardinal principles of the Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality could be served well by providing connectivity to all colleges and universities, providing low cost and affordable access cum computing devices to students and teachers and providing high quality e-content free of cost to all learners in the Country. National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) encompasses all the three elements. Connectivity to Universities and Colleges has already started. Nearly 8500 Colleges in the country have already been connected, high quality e-content in various subjects is being created and under the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), nearly 500 web based and video courses are available and uploaded on “sakshat”, YouTube and NPTEL portals and another 1100 courses in various disciplines of engineering and science are getting generated in 4 quadrant approach.

The ministry started its efforts , subsequent to lukewarm response from known corporates in this sector, by holding discussions on this concept with a group of Professors / experts at IISc, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay. B.Tech and M.Tech students were guided to produce the mother board for such low cost devices with ample flexibility to change components. One mother board design was generated under Ministry’s guidance in the B.Tech project of a student at VIT, Vellore. The cost of bill of material worked to 47 $ at that point of time. The PCB of the mother board was got fabricated at IIT Kanpur. It could be seen that by customising the device to the needs of learners across the country, and utilizing the processor capabilities of processors suitable for the purpose, it was possible to substantially reduce the prices of such access-cum-computing devices. Then started a wave of collaboration with such interested partners.

A number of teams have been moving back and forth independently but constantly interacting with the HRD Ministry and improving upon design parameters and customization guidance for Indian students. The efforts of some of the teams working with those design philosophies were presented today. The aim is to reach such devices to the students of colleges and Universities and to provide these institutions a host of choices of low cost access devices around Rs. 1500/- ($35) or less in near future.

For as cheap as 1500 or even 3000, it should sell like hot cakes, if it can act as a basic ebook reader.
EDIT: Engadget reports that it might be running Android..! :)

India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

On July 22 a $35 (or 1500 INR) hand-held Linux computing device was unveiled by Shri Kapil Sibal, the Union Minister for Human Resource Development of India. The goal of the project is to lower the price to around $20 in time and eventually reaching the amazing price of $10.

In a tablet form-factor and using an unspecified variant of Linux (that some have said might be Android), the cost should remain low while offering a wide range of functionality. The Sakshat descendant is said to be capable of supporting video conferencing, viewThe technical specification details were sparse mainly due to continuing development, but sources say replacement parts and upgrades should be fairly standard. What we do know is that it will have at least a 7-inch color touch screen (judging from the photos), 2 GB of storage, WiFi, Ethernet, 2 watts of power consumption (going by earlier incarnations), a solar-power option, and a custom scaled-down version of Linux. Further speculation has it powered by an ARM-based controller and including a low-power webcam. Reports have indicated that several variations may eventually become available with different options and configurations.ing a wide selection of video and image files, word processing, de/compressing files, printing with CUPS, full Internet browsing with Javascript and Flash, wireless communications, and remote device management.

Re: India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

Yeah right. Lets see the over-hyped Adam first, then we'll talk about second or third rung gadgets. I mean seriously, what are the chances that such a product will be available at any time, forget 'later in the year' ?

PS: I secretly hope that they make it work! :)

Re: India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

Long long back, there was supposed to be a $10 laptop designed exclusively for students. Well, that exactly didn't see the light of the day..

Don't hope too much, guys.

Re: India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

another way for congress men to make billions of commissions and money in name of projects who never see daylight.

Re: India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

Meh. Call me cynical, but I don't see this happening EVER!

Re: India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

if it becomes a reality, i'll get it to read manga or just browse net if internet is available on that device. wonder if they will sell it in open market considering its for students only...

Re: India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

Yeah, I have to agree. Wasn't there a report about a $10 laptop or something?

Re: Yet another Indian low cost handheld computing device - with government subsidy

well i guess thats only the manufacturing cost, with manufacturers profit, dealers profit, freight charges and vat it should go up.One can already get a similar device in commercial market for around 4k shipped.
The government is still looking for manufactures

Re: India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

Even IF they are able to accomplish this, this will never be available in open market. Moreover they may have to subsidize 90% of it's cost.

Re: Yet another Indian low cost handheld computing device - with government subsidy

Good price for its advertised features and specs. But this machine would not really worth or would handle applications too slow.

Re: Yet another Indian low cost handheld computing device - with government subsidy

^ Adding to the fact that it will not be for retail at that price point. According to Mr Sibal, they are going to subsidise it even further for the institutions by paying Rs 750 from their own pockets.. i.e. it will cost the institution only about Rs 750.. Good going!!

Hope to see it in schools and universities by next year this time :D

Re: Yet another Indian low cost handheld computing device - with government subsidy

This device is awesome!!!

Im very optimistic, it can get caught in scandals and be used as a money making machine, but this not just a plan, its an actual device, this isnt just a dream..
