I didnt find such a thread here, so thought of starting. If one exists, Mods please delete/lock this one.

Now: How did you get introduced to a comp for the first time. Please share your
experience.

Mine:
Used it for the first time in class 9. There was a queue of around 40guys to enter couple of numbers and hit enter for a basic program our instructor had run

Second was in my engineering first year. I was s**t scared to even touch the keyboard. But was hooked on in next couple of months.

In year 1985 In school Computer room- we played some games on it :) space age

Then in 1997 I got my computer when I was in Medical College First year

No looking back afetr that Now its just like basic thing in life as Roti Kapra Or Makan

Jatinder

touched a keyboard first time in Class 10th...just typed out my name in Edit (DOS) and was more than thrilled ;)

First taste of the Internet was in class 12th on a shell connection...

Got my 1st (shared) comp in 2nd yr of engg with the cost shared between 4 friends...

first played paratroopers (any one remember?) on a 88MHz 486 (i think) in school along with Logo and the cumpolsory pacman in standard 8 in 1996.. Got my first system in 2004

I 1'st got the PC when I was in 5th :) I was not amazed cause had already seen some arnd :P So had a good experience with PC :D but from then till today am using same kinda PC

Had gone to a comp lab with my cousin sis (she was doing a course at Apple Computers :P) and at command prompt typed "1 + 2 = ?<ENTER>"

Got my first error message from M$ then and there.... bad command or file name.

My first rig was after completing my 10th boards (2000). It was a p3 500 Mhz with 128MB zomg ram and a voodoo 3 accelerator with 8MB onboard vram (zomg)

next was in first year of college (2002), a athlon XP 1800 system with 1GB ram! Was blown away with the performance. Literally.

From then on, i have never looked back :P

Hmmm...1994 I think...no HDD, floppy boot to DOS things..played a monochrome Arkanoid like thing and 'programmed' LET - PRINT thingie to calculate sum in BASIC...hehehe

dont know when i started but..

first few times .. my bro used to yell at me for deleting files.. lol..

my first challenge = to make "show headers" enabled in yahoo mail ..roflol..

:)

first got my hands on computers in 1995 in my 5th standard. Started with LOGO and a game called Alley cat. Progressed onto a celeron 466, 64 megs ram in 98/99 and then got an xp1800+, 512 meg ram machine in 2002, later upgraded it with a 5700 and had a farking ball playing games on it.

Abhi, am stuck with a compaq lappy with a shitty i945 gm chippy, solo core 1.86 ghz cpu and 512 megs of ram.

first pc i used must be a 286 :-) , played some game like brick ( that to after pleading and eating food :-) )
first printer used espon DOT MATRIX:bleh:

next was a 486 - allan boders cricket & dave

after that was a major upgrade .

celeron - 300 mhz - 64 mb ram - 48x creative cd rom motorola external modem , 100 hrs of internet from VSNL for 3.5k ( god :S ) , floppy dirve and creative speakers :ohyeah:

and then more n many more...

first language - logo then basic c++ java + c# , sql database mgmt , linux administration , wml , xml , java vb scripts , vb .... :D :D :D

oh NOW i am studying LAW ... 3rd:P year lolz... all that above went a complete WASTE :0-))))))

i touched 1st pc during 1995's in school. we were learning LOGO and DOS commands and peripherals.. i was so crazy, i used to do mischief with school comp.. was the best enjoyable lecture during school. we were having a lecturer and were teasing him "DOCUMENT" (DOKKUMENT) when he used to write it on a white board with removable marker.. we were ahving group of 10 ppl and we all shout DOKKUMENT when he turns around to write on board.. he used to get frustrated.. and never got angry as his pronounciation was like that only -DOKKUMENT  and then he left school within 2 months. they taught me floppy disk and hard disk. i was like floppy disc must b soft and hard disk must be like stones or something. but learning on those black and white monitor was an enjoyable experience

1 of the mischief story:

they used to have a creative cd drive in school (with a remote sensor) i used to have same creative cd-rom drive with remote in my home pc.. i than used to press eject button from the remote and the tray would pop out (school server) that DOCUMENT lecturer was confused and i used to eject and close tray for 10-15 times in the lecture and he used to tell other lecturers the cd-rom tray problem (obviously when the assignment was given to us)

1/4 of the lecture was gone discussing this problem with others in classroom.. finally he taped that drive instead of powering off

1 thing makes me proud of.. i was the no.1 to no.3 scoring highest marks in computers.. i used to fail in subjects like social studies n was exempted many times :P

i wish i cud live those wonderful days again..

Got my own pc during April 1997. (cost me 42K with windows 95 :bleh:)

Config: Intel Pentium 200Mhz

RAM: 32Mb

HDD: 2GB

VIDEO: SIS 6326 or something 4Mb Video ram

External soundcard: (was ISA and was kinds big like Nvidia's 6600GT card.)

Monitor: 14" E641-2 viewsonic (the best one till today) was able to play midtown madness and other lallu games easily on this machine.

used to play ROTT 3d, Hocus pocus, allan border cricket, cricket 97, dangerous dave :P prince of persia part 1 and 2 (dos) and many more

after that, i had 3-4 upgrades.. the longest time i stayed with my system was P4 with HT stayed with me for 3 years +

First experience was around 91 on my dad's close friend's PC in the opposite building. It was a 386 and it ran a legit copy of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups. A year or two later I think, in school, we had LOGO, Basic, Paratrooper, Dig Dug and Pacman. I remember always looking forward to practicals!

Around 92 or 93, we bought a 2nd hand PC/XT from a computer institute as a temporary beginner system. It had a hood like the car bonnets. The 20MB hard drive was bigger than todays DVD drives. Dad had net access at work and would get me stuff everyday on 5.25" floppies :P A lot of the DOS gaming happened here..

A year and a couple of repairs later, the PC/XT was thrown away and a brand new machine was built(I so very well remember going to Lamington Rd for the first time with dad) - 486DX2/66MHz, 8MB RAM which became 32MB by the time of its retirement. A Trident 512KB display adaptor and a Opti 929 sound card and speakers of course. A 4X Creative CD Drive, a 630MB Seagate HDD and a keyboard from from the same period that still worked when I last checked it a few months back!Oh and a 14" SVGA monitor! :P

All the machines since then are still here except the 2nd hand PC/XT. The screen is still here though! There are so many crazy memories like installing Windows 95 through 1.44" floppies or infecting my dad's friend's PC with the Die Hard virus and then removing it the next week successfully, initially unsuccessful Slackware installation attempt in 96 (It was a orange PCQ CD I THINK) which became successful in a day or two :cool2: ! It was great....I can really go on forever

i vaguely remember the first 486 we had at home.. was in 1991 or 92 i think, was in 1st at that time..
next yr when i got into 2nd we started on LOGO in school and those r the memories i remember more.. :D
and then when we got our first pentium at home in 1994..

I think for me it was in class 6 or 7 or 8, LOGO came later used to play Paratroopers, Pacman and a game called Rhino I think.

Windows 3.11 3.10, programme manager, Antivirus was smartdog I think.. hehe.

First exp was at my cousin's place in 1987 was a 8086, played a game called round 42.

Huh those days were something you required a 5.5" boot disk everytime u wanted to start the comp, and if by mistake the disk got spoilt you would be in a mess, as not many ppl had comps back in 80's...

5th standard, in my dad's friend's PC :P, use to go there one in month to play Dave, mario n prince of persia :P

It must be in 1997/98 when i joined a coaching for like general computer thingies :bleh: my course included Basic DOS commands + Wordstar 4.0 + Dbase 1-2-3 +Windows 3.1 Introduction (Mouse lessons, Paint, and Microsoft word 96)

I still remember the introductory wallpaper for Word 96 was of a Ink Pen held downwards

And yeah saturday used to be awesome. It was game day :p

Allan Border Cricket , Dave (still my fav.) , Prince of Persia , Lionking , Alladin etc ;)

Those were the days :D

Well 1st time internet, i was in 9th i.e 1999 and went to cyber cafe with my friend, I didnt know where to put the address :p Opened an yahoo account which took me 30 min and i had to pay 30 bucks for that :bleh:

it all started in the 7th std for me... dad's friend had kept his PC at out place, for a year.

started fiddling with DOS and learned it in no time.... infact i was thrilled when i found that DOOM was hidden in some folder on the comp.... extracted some files and voila... it was DOOM time..

also had ian botham cricket...where after a fresh installation, the fielders were present only in the first match :S

after a year, the comp was taken away....and i was crying coz it seemed to me that i was losing a close friend of mine...

Such were the days then... :)

I typed it as hmasaliaathotmail.com

hehehe

1st exprience with 256 Kbs Broadband with iqara

Was amazed at its speed!!

Now even a 2 MBs seems slow :P

my first stint with computers was in school when i was in tenth in 1989.
started using BBC Micro Computers with no hdd and attachable Floppy. If electricity went bust then poof you are done with. :P

Used to learn BASIC and LOGO. was excellent at studies and computers both. went on to become first prsident of computer club of my school.

Then when i was in hostel in Higher secondary lost the touch. After joining the Medical college one of my best pal acquired a 386 PC then we both started experimenting.

During my Internship one senior doctor who was fond of Chess had a PC and he used to play with Fritz software his computer went bust once and no tech in local market could solve it every one sugested format but he had a huge databse of chess games on it and backup was not existent.

I brought antivirus boot disks and it turned out to be a virus infection with huge list of files infected which were recovered. I upgraded his windows to 3.11 and reinstalled everything again with partitioning the hdd and keeping the chess games in separate partition.

In 1998 we had our first computer purchase a P-II 350 mhz, with 64 MB ram and Trinity 4 MB vRAM gfx card. (this pc is still running and my father maintains his accounts with it :hap2:)

after starting my own practice i purchased a pc for myself at clinic a P4 2.0 Ghz which is my main workhorse till date.

In recent past i got infected with upgraditis and got my self a Dell Inspiron 6400 with C2D.

During my post 12th days i had luxury of selecting any course of my choice in any college of Gujarat, but my hatred of Maths and liking of amazing human body i selected medicine over Computers.
I still wonder whether i did right or not :P

But i am enjoying my present day life with access to one of my passions Computers at my fingertips :deejay:
