I have immediately noticed a very large misunderstanding about art, it’s market, why it’s sold for such high prices etc. An awesome aspect about art is that anyone can declare anything art, an obvious example would be Duchamp placing a signed urinal in a gallery. That act literally had major effects on everyone here today, it completely shifted our view of what art is and can be. Right now we are in the baby stages, and in my completely subjective opinion, I agree, most of this art is bad and not worth the value it is selling at. However that subjective opinion doesn’t matter, someone else put a super high price on a work and a collector saw the value in that. As traditional collectors and arts patrons discover this world, that monetary judgement will start to even out, then evolve. The question is what that evolution looks like, what will we define as art in 10-20 years, it won’t resemble what we see as art now. I don’t think anyone can conceptualize what that is right now.
