YouTube's popularity is proving to be a headache for a company with a similar Web address. Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment Corp. is suing the viral video site recently acquired by Google, according to a news report on WTOL-TV in Toledo, Ohio. The lawsuit alleges that YouTube.com is confusingly similar to Universal Tube's UTube.com, which sells tube, pipe and rollforming machinery. Universal Tube said its Web site traffic jumped from 1,500 users per month to more than 2 million, paralyzing the site.

"This is an enormous expense and distraction for us. Contact with our customers has been disrupted so I fear we have lost sales," Universal Tube owner Ralph Girkins said in a statement. "We have even been contacted by police in Australia accusing us of having child pornography on our website. I resent this personally and this confusion is hurting our business." The lawsuit asks that YouTube stop using the youtube.com domain or reimburse Universal Tube for the cost of establishing a new corporate identity.

"We were there first -- by 10 years. Now I see a potential re-branding that could take years to complete," Girkins said. "I'm not the kind of person who looks for lawsuits, but my business is being threatened by this situation." The suit comes about three weeks after YouTube was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion in stock. Neither Google nor YouTube represenatives could be reached for comment.

I'm sure they're doing it because YouTube is now owned by Google, and Utube hope to earn some Google stock or money to shut up :)

I think this is the exact case. Google should probably counter sue saying that UTube is taking away their traffic. :rofl:
 
It could be a genuine problem as well, you know i saw the utube.com ranking move up 400% on alexa a few weeks ago thats a shit load of an increase imagine the servers of a company catering to 1,400 being sent shit loads of traffic haha their normal customers will not be able to purchase.

But they sueing someone is just stupidity. I just filled up the contact form on their site asking them "Where are the videos you fucars??"

Suggest everyone do that their gonna get fried :)
 
if i was the owner of Utube, id get rid of that stupid site there and start a video service of my own there :ohyeah:

Absolutely, their traffic goes from 1.5K to 2 million and they are complaining. Ill start a new business, any business. Maybe start off a pr0n site with lots of ads. :bleh:
 
Utube knows Google will pay them off once they become a big PITA sending weekly legal notices and follow up notices etc. :)

but that paymet would benothing compared to what they wud have earned if they started something on that domain..

knowing google, i think they'll just buy off that utube domain from them lol
 
Based on their nature of business, they don't the expertise to convert a high-traffic site into a web-based cash generating machine through search marketing (and neither will it occur to them :D).
