ZTE has announced their new flagship smartphone, the ZTE Nubia Z5. We already knew that this device was in bound. Now we have all the details we wanted to know. And it's safe to say that this device impresses (and puts competition such as the HTC Droid DNA to shame, to put it simply). Let's see what makes ZTE's 5" smartphone so amazing.
ZTE Nubia Z5

The ZTE Nubia Z5 has extremely thin bezel. 2.67 mm of bezel, to be precise. That is nothing short of astounding. The bezel on top isn't much either. We wish that was the case with the bottom part of the phone as well, which has a red circle button (soft key). That being said, the device is a looker. And it does this and packs all features while maintaining a slim and sexy 7.6 mm of thickness only.

ZTE Nubia Z5 Specifications

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 chipset
  • 1.5 GHz quad core Krait CPU
  • Adreno 320 GPU
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 5" Full HD 1080p (1920*1080) display
  • 443 ppi pixels density
  • 13 MP f/2.2 aperture rear camera
  • 1080p video recording @ 30 fps
  • 2 MP front facing camera
  • 720p video calling
  • 32 GB of internal storage
  • 7.6 mm thickness
  • NFC, Bluetooth, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, no LTE
  • 2,300 mAh battery
  • Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean

The spec sheet does nothing but impress. Those who were disappointed by the HTC Droid DNA's low internal storage and battery, well here you have the ZTE Nubia Z5 made just for you. We expect ZTE to update the phone to Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean pretty soon as well.

5" Full HD panels have become a common place for flagship smartphones now. But the ZTE Nubia Z5 pushes that another step up by encompassing all of it in a super thin bezel. And despite a 7.6 mm thickness, it manages to cram a good 2300 mAh battery as well. First reports were of 3000 mAh rating, we wish that were true (too good to be true).

ZTE has also pushed on the multimedia front, with a 13 MP camera module promising much. The phone packs NFC (Near Field Communication) chip, which is seeing increased applications these days. The pack of LTE will be an issue for American users (who cribbed for the same reason with the Google Nexus 4). Despite that, we expect this device to sell well in other countries.

Thanks to the especially good price tag of just $555 (for such a device, wow!) you are quickly left wanting (or craving) for ZTE to launch this device in your country as well. The phone will cost a good $150 to $250 less than the HTC Deluxe (global version of the Droid DNA) when it launches world wide. This automatically makes the Nubia Z5 a far better contender for Value of Money, as well as everything else in this case.

There will be a special premium model called the Titanium model for $1,265 for those who really want that badly.

ZTE Grand X

ZTE is on a roll, truly. With their flagship Nubia Z5 announced ZTE is also preparing a revision of the older ZTE Grand X. The device is a mid range smartphone with decent specifications for it's own category.

ZTE Grand X Specifications

  • nVidia Tegra 2 chipset
  • 1 GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 CPU
  • ULP GeForce GPU
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • 4.3" qHD (960*540) capacitive display
  • 5 MP rear camera, 720p video recording
  • 1,650 mAh battery
  • Android 4.0 ICS

We do not understand why ZTE is relaunching such an old phone with specifications that can't be found anywhere at all! It's a mystery. It's also a possibility of excess stock being cleared away by ZTE. If that's the case, we hope for a Jelly Bean update and a nice price tag to give this device a chance in a world of quad cores, Snapdragon S4s and 1080p display panels.

The phone also packs the old design 4 button capacitive layout below the display. Yes, that Search button exists (many people just ran away on reading that). We are all used to 3 buttons only now (and rightly so).

Let's see what comes of this device. Only time will tell.
