Hi folks!

A friend of mine is opening a cafe and needs help with ISP selection, network h/w and related configuration. He wants the Internet access to be open (socmed sites, regular browsing, streaming sites Youtube/Vimeo/Dailymotion) for guests (except pron sites/illegal domains ofcourse). I am helping him out with the same and need some pointers/suggestions regarding the following -
1. ISP selection criteria - unlimited bandwidth
2. min 30 users, max 100 users without affecting browsing speeds
3. standard access filters/criteria
4. requirement of h/w or s/w based firewall?
5. network and network h/w configuration

TIA!

Payment in beer pints!

I would suggest to basically keep 2 ISPs, so that downtime is negligible. Bandwidth should be in 70:30 ratio. One should be a vendor such as your local cablenet vendor, and the other will be MTNL/etc - your choice.

Coming to access, are you going to allow BYOD? If not, then squid+dansguardian/squidguard is a great option. If yes, then some more work needs to be done.

Use pfsense as the distro of choice.

The main issue is keeping logs.

Aren't normal ISP plans not allowed for cyber cafes? Given that cyber cafe use would be much higher than in normal residential.

Nowadays i don't think cybercafe is worth business because everyone have smartphone with cheap internet plans, teens often prefer to play games on their phones. On top of that if you block pron sites i don't think he will able to survive in the business. Just my 2 cents. Anyway good luck to your friend
