Hello

I have recently bought a PS3 and a 32 Inch Sony Bravia TV.

Currently I am using a 2.1 speaker with TV (Creative , Meant for PC ), by connecting it to the Headphone jack.

I was planning to buy a 5.1 and I thought it would be as simple as it was to connect 2.1 . But I read that usually TV will not have the power to provide surround sound by itself, so some adapters will be needed.

Now I am lost. From what I understand, that standard 5.1 PC speakers won't work with he TV.

Should I then buy a Home theater System? Will that solve the issue? (I dont want that DVD thing they give, just Speakers).

Or is there any way to connect them to PS3 directly, or will I be needing some kinda amplifiers?

What is the best way to setup a surround sound system in this scenario.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Your PS3 has only 2 channel analog audio outputs, 5.1 channel is sent out via HDMI/digital out.

Your TV probably has the same. Mention the exact model number, so someone can cross-check.

Regular 5.1 PC speakers need analog audio outputs (Front R/L, Rear R/L, Centre/Sub) to connect to.

If the 5.1 PC speakers you're looking at support digital inputs, then the way you could connect it is :

PS3 >--HDMI cable--> TV >---Optical/Coax cable--> 5.1 PC speakers

Long story short, 5.1 speaker setup with only analog inputs wont get you 5.1 surround sound.. you need one with a digital input.

A couple of minor clarifications :

- Every speaker needs an amplifier to drive it. In your 5.1 PC speakers, this amp is usually housed inside the subwoofer. In a compact integrated HT setup, this would again be in the sub or DVD player. In a component type HT setup, there's a separate amplifier.

- The audio outputs run at 'line level', i.e. its useful only for transmitting a signal, it cannot directly run speakers. So there's no such thing as a TV not having enough power to run 5.1 speakers - even 2 channel audio would not run on line level output.

I have one more doubt. I have connected my PS3 to TV using HDMI.

Now my TV supports audio out in red/white kinda socket :

I saw a 5.1 speaker which supports the input in that form. Now if i Buy a cable and connect my TV to that speaker, will I be able to get 5.1 surround sound?

Those are stereo outputs, i.e. front left/right. So its not surround sound.

Most 5.1 systems can accept stereo inputs and then feed the same thing to all speakers, with a bit of delay to make it pseudo surround sound.

For 5.1 audio, you need either 6 RCA jacks (analog) or an S/PDIF coaxial/optical link (digital).

Component is only for analog video. So if using Component, you would also need an S/PDIF connection for the audio part.

The seq would be :

PS3 > (Component + S/PDIF) or HDMI > Home Theater > (Component + S/PDIF) or HDMI > TV

Unfortunately it looks like the DAV-TZ135 doesn't have either HDMI or S/PDIF input.

Edit:

This should help you figure out the connections : http://canadahifi.com/images/articles/HomeTheatre_HookupGuide1.jpg

Substitute DVD player for PS3.

yes,the sony only has a composite in,not even component and stereo RCA in jacks.and a hdmi OUT.afaik there arent many home theater systems for ~10k(the sony's price bracket) which have 5.1 audio in/spdif in/hdmi in.i bought one(a sony ht) thinking i could use it with my xbox 360,didnt work out

sorry for hijacking this thread, but since i have a similar need, what next?get a onkyo AV reciever system?

PS3 has an optical output, you need a optical to analog converter that supports surround decoding.

Ideally you need an HTiB of some kind which has a digital input. Or a AVR+HT with HDMI if you would rather use the HDMI output of the PS3.

For 5.1 audio, you need either 6 RCA jacks (analog) or an S/PDIF coaxial/optical link (digital).

QFT. There are simply no other options.

Oh yeah the PS3 has only 2 channel analog audio, so this wouldn't work.

Not sure if there are any 5.1 DACs out there, other than in HT receivers.

You need something with S/PDIF or HDMI inputs for 5.1 audio.
