CPU/Mobo Suggest motherboard for i2500k

Hi Guys,

I already have the following components:

1) SB i2500k

2) OCZ 120GB SSD

3) GSkill Ripjaws-X 8GB

They are looking for a new motherboard, I am not a hardcore OCer, a little bit is fine. The requirements are gaming, movies and the usual. I am confused if I should go for the z68 or p67 chipset. Rest of the component will be used from my existing system.

I was looking at the following:

1)Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4

2)ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z ( not sure if i need to splurge on this one)

3) Asus P67-Pro

I think I would be ok to spending upto 10k, cause history has told me me spending 14-15k on high end mobos, I havent really made use of!

Since you've bought I5 2500K I'd suggest you to get these for max oc performance-

ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z- 13.5k or

ASUS P8Z68V GEN3-14.5K

If you're on a tight budget of 11k then go for-

[font=arial,helvetica,sans-serif][font=verdana,geneva,sans-serif]ASUS P8Z68-M[/font][/font]-10.5K OR [font=verdana,geneva,sans-serif]ASUS P8Z68V-LE[/font]-10.9K

To oc the proccy you should atleast get Cooler Master Hyper 212 evo-2.1k or Noctua nh-u12p se2-3.9k
 
^^ Get a Z68 based motherboard, it'll be more than enough for your needs in case you are not looking to break benchmark barriers OR over-clock to insane levels. Here are the motherboards I'll recommend --

ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z ~13500/- OR

ASUS P8Z68-M PRO ~10500/-

Also get a third party cooler for your CPU, some recommends from my side are --

I recommend ASUS motherboards over their Gigabyte counterparts as they have UEFI enabled [which is very user friendly compared to the standard BIOS we get to see on most motherboards these days, it is better than Gigabyte / MSi's attempt at Hybrid-BIOS which are a pain to handle and very excruciating to use]

Go for option 1. I am having it & I can vouch for it, moreover anandtech has also recommended it.

[font=arial, sans-serif]the gen3 mobos are as of now useless... and of no particular higher grade compared to the gen2 ones.. enjoy ocing..

Thanks guys for the response, and yes I forgot to ask about the cooler.

A few more questions:

1) isnt the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z a m-ATX mobo, if yes, will not cramp up the component, and hinder ventilation?

2) I like the P8Z68 M Pro option, will check out the number of SATA controllers, and if it fits my requirement will probably go for it.
 
^^ 1) Both are micro-ATX offerings, Sandy-Bridge chips run cool on the whole [it is the stupid Intel stock Heat Sink Fan that sucks and causes heating issues in general],

2) the P8Z68-M PRO is a good choice but I would recommend the Maximus IV Gene-Z if you really want to over-clock to the limit.

For the cooler depending on what is your personal preference as well as your budget, I'll recommend the following cooling solutions -->

Yes you right, I just learnt that, and hence was considering the P8Z68 V LE, which is a normal size board, any drawbacks with this board? I can definitely go with the Maximus, but honeslty I dont see the point, for example with my current P5Q Deluxe, I barely OCed my E8400, but I do like the value adds of a dual bios, for OCing noobs like me.

For cooling, Ill most likely go for the CM Hyper 212 evo.

With the money saved on the motherboard, invest in the Noctua-NH U12P SE2 ~3900/-, it'll perform better than the Hyper 212 EVO and should give you a better head-room before you hit the thermal wall.

Gosh none of my regular dealers seem to have the asus boards in stock!!! Rc automation and delta that is, they offer the basic z68 intel board, which ain't gonna cut, I am gonna spend some more time and see what I can find!!

edit- guys what's the gen3 funda, Any point shelling out extra for a gen 3??

No point spending extra for Generation 3 motherboards for the Sandy-Bridge platform, most of the offerings are not really necessary OR game-changing in ways, search for the ASUS motherboard OR try to get this -- Intel DP67 BG ~10800/- http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=647&Itemid=69 / http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/p67-motherboard-roundup-lga-1155-sandy-bridge,2837-14.html.

I just ordered the Gene 3 from them came in in a week.

NO trouble and working great.

If you would like that board its in stock for you.

Why do you even want the PRO of Z68 version over the P67 the vanilla one??

If its for SSD caching then you are better off buying a 60gb SSD or so and installing the OS on it rather than just using SSD caching....

Save another grand there if you take the vanilla one....IMO.

Got the P8Z68-V, thanks to you guys. I set up the system and it seems balzing fast due to the SSD, dint get the time to load up steam :-)

If i may add something to this discussion, here is how i would have considered buying a mobo for myself-

- If OCing for sure, i wouldn't look any lower than the following-

Maximus IV Extreme-Z, Maximus IV Gene-Z, P8Z68 Deluxe, P8Z68-V PRO, P8Z68-V.

In fact, OCing-wise, the Maximus IV Gene-Z seems to as good as the Maximus IV Extreme-Z, for almost half the price and a little less features obviously- a great option if using a single graphics card and do not require any more slots than one for a PCIe x1(/x4) card like Xonar DX/STX or something.

- P8Z68-V LE and P8Z68-M PRO seem to be designed to provide Z68 benefits to those on a tight budget.
