I need a 24/7 downloading rig.

Budget-5k

I already ahve a monitor,HDD,DVD drive and other accessories.

I am thinking of buying Intel Atom.

Would it fit my requirements?
 
go for it.i am using intel atom D425 kit for some months now & have run it continuously many times for 5-6 days without any problems.just keep in mind that it does not have any PATA ports only SATA.

Dude Intel ATOM will not fit that budget, instead increase your budget a little and go for this --

AMD E-350 [dual-core APU] fused onto a µITX motherboard ~7500/-

Corsair ValueRAM 4GB x1 ~1100/-

Cooler Master eLite 360 ~2500/-

FSP Saga II 400W ~1900/-

AMD E350 vs. ATOM D510

^ why? Intel atom would be perfect for a 24/7 download rig @ 5k , Atleast it will be closer to 5k budget than E350 , If its only going to be used as a download rig then CPU benchmark comparison is irrelevant.

Can you hand me an ATOM at that price point?

Plus the AMD Bobcat SoC is more efficient than Intel's design. Even with a more powerful IGP on the processor die it draws lesser power than the competing Intel dual-core ATOM.

The issue with Intel option here is you cannot just buy an ATOM processor and call it a day, you will have to pair it with the ION platform to work, which is not the case with AMD as they offer a full integrated package completely developed by them.

As i said,the only requirement is downloading....nothing else...

So i think ATOM would fit in quite well and i can use 2GB ram instead of 4,and i want a small,very affordable cabinet.
 
@Arjun How much will it all cost?

Can u recommend a cabinet to me?

And would i need to attach any fans to control the temperature?

See I got that, the point is --
  • The Intel ATOM processor is not standalone, you need to buy an associated motherboard from the ION platform to make it work plus RAM and if I am not wrong ION support DDR II RAM standards [correct or vindicate me].
  • The AMD Brazos package is more powerful, consumes lesser power and supports DDR III RAM, which is dirt cheap these days that is why I am asking you to go for a 4GB module ~1100/- a 2GB module ~750/-.
  • This here is the Cooler Master eLite 360, it has a smaller cousin the eLite 100. But the eLite 100 is more expensive.
  • You do understand that a more efficient power supply will ensure that even if you keep the PC on for the whole day, it consumes lesser power.

It doesnt make sense to pay 4k more to save a extra Rs 100 -150 in your power bill

I hae no idea about cabinets , cooler master has some good option as mentioned by Alpha17 , a 80 mm intake fan would be good enough for a mini - itx case, there are also 60 mm fans available but they make a lot of noise , the cooler master case may come with fan pre installed

No the Cooler Master eLite 360 has no case fans, so OP will need to invest in those.

Plus no SMPS, so a minimum ~1500/- expenditure there as well. Though I recommend #[member='nimitbhardwaj'] that you go for the Corsair CX V2 430W ~2400/-. Because down the line you are bound to get a few more hard-drives down the line on this RIG.

I think matter is still not solved here.

Buying a download rig for above 10k is a pure waste of money.

Better is to download on my main PC which i think sucks a lot of electricity and i have to hear the buzzing of its fans in the night

This is the only reason i want to invest in a separate downlod-rig.
 
I think either way,it wont fit into 5k.Will try to increase the budget and catch up with u guys later.

Look I was okay stepping down to ATOM it makes sense but, this is too much going for a local cabinet + SMPS is the biggest mistake you can do for a 24 / 7 download RIG.

The cornerstone for this set-up is efficiency and going for local SMPS is the best way of losing it, also I think you are aware of what local SPMS can do to electrical components.

Why don't you go for a Raspbery Pi Nimit, will be perfect for you and dead cheap. Only prerequisite is that you should not mind playing around with Linux. Doesn't need an elaborate cabinet OR fancy SMPS to run efficiently either.
