Though certainly appealing, after spending on an iPad, I am not going to buy another 10" device again. I need a proper 13" Ultrabook with a touchscreen and detachable keyboard. :D
 
Legacy devices denied WP8, offered WP7.8 instead

After several long months of contradicting rumors, the owners of the current crop of WP smartphones finally got official information regarding the eligibility of their devices for a WP8 upgrade. Sadly, the answer Microsoft delivered isn't the one we were all hoping for.

It was confirmed that the just announced Windows Phone 8 won't be coming to any of the existing WP smartphones. The reasons for this are yet unclear, with some pointing to the limited hardware and others speculating it's just an attempt by Microsoft to make users upgrade.

The consolation is that even if you don't change smartphones, at least some of the cool Windows Phone 8 features will be made available to you. Microsoft will be treating legacy hardware to a Windows Phone 7.8, which will enable the resizable live tiles as well as a few other features that weren't explicitly mentioned.

The Windows Phone 7.8 update will be brought directly to the users, which means carrier approvals won't slow down its rollout. There's no saying yet when the update will be delivered, though.

recently I got my wife a Lumia 710. (well, she liked it - not to argue anymore)
Now I suppose 3G data 2GB for 4 months are free with it from Airtel.
Some confirmation message came too. But I am not sure about the settings. haven't received any settings.
Tried adding an APN (only using airtelgprs.com) in network settings.
Now it shows connected and I am able to browse.
But in the connection/notification area it shows E.
But I guess for 3G, it should be showing G

Am I doing something wrong or is it like that ?

It's a known trick used by airtel kolkata. Just create a new connection, name it as you like, provide the requisite apns, viz airtelgprs.com and airtelmms.com and you are good to go. It shows H if 3g is activated. buzz me if you want to know more.
 
I rely a lot on Skype to communicate with my overseas clients. I wish to know if there are any Skype users over here? How well does Skype function on Windows Mobile 7.5? Do push messages work (Via Skype IM+ or any other app)?

Skype is flawless and always connected on my iPad 2 & on my iPhone 3GS, will Windows Mobile provide me with similar connectivity.

P.S. - It isnt going to be my primary phone.

Samsung has't and mostly won't announce the date. But i hope we do get it some day. Though tango is a very minor update for us, since we already have Internet Sharing. Samsungs ignorance towards WP phone really scares me. I hope WP7.8 is pushed by MS itself. Waiting for Samsung to dispatch WP7.8 after Lumia has already got it will really be frustrating!
 
got a samsung focus and intended to use it as secondary fone but now using it primarily :). totally love it.
but but but .. i am totally lost in the dev world. i am not able to start from a point. i bought the fone from this forum ( grt guy :) ). It had att rom and the guy flashed the clean rom 2.0.
I am quite happy with all this. But need to use custom ringtone, 3g toggle and all. Any help will be appreciated.
Especially custom ringtone thing.

Skype does not run in background in WP7.5
And since it is your primary requirement, I suggest DO NOT buy any current WP. WP8 will have this feature and looking at the demo it seems WP8 will provide excellent Skype experience. But since its not yet confirm whether existing WP devices will get this feature via WP7.8 update (I think it won't be available), better wait for WP8 devices which should be available by year end.
One alternative is to log in to Skype via IM+ for push messages and then open Skype app for calls whenever required. But its not that convenient and IM+ does not work that great all the time.

WP7.8 update will be pushed by MS directly and it will be available to ALL existing devices. So don't worry about that :) Tango on the other hand is in the hands of carriers.

1. do you want to develop an app for the phone or are you confused with using homebrew apps?

2. straight forward method to get custom ringtones would be to use application such as "free ringtones" or easyring&music. if you want your own music, just trim that mp3 to under 40 seconds, save it, change the genre to Ringtone and then sync it to your phone using Zune, it will appear in the ringtone list. If you want to change the tone for messages and alerts then it's a bit more complicated.

3. get windows phone tweaks and wp root tools to find more advanced features.

I am confused with using homebrew apps. And i am satisfied with the txt tone but wanted to customize ringtone. Thanks fr the heads up. Will try.
 
seeing that you have the clean rom, you can browse the XAP in IE and install it from there itself. to try head over to windowsphonehacker.com and download the lockscreenwidget or wph tweaks etc.
