What's your Budget?
50-60K

What will be your primary usage for the notebook be?

· Office - Word, Excel, Powerpoint
· Internet - Multiple browser windows will be open
· Presentations via projector

What size and weight considerations do you have?
13-14". The lighter, the better. Preferably under 1.7 Kgs

Any brand that you prefer?
Any that has decent build quality and service.

Any other considerations?

· Battery Life: Needs to be over 5 hrs. Dad is a road warrior.
· Would prefer a SSD
· Looks - the simpler the better. Preferably not a finger print magnet
· Backlit keyboard, if possible
· HDMI out required.
· Screen resolution doesn't matter too much

Unfortunately cannot buy this from abroad. He was initially considering a Macbook Air (13”). But hates the lack of delete key and does not want to buy a Mac to install windows.

TIA

I would suggest Lenovo U310

Also a "non ultrabook" but still less than 1.7 kg and battery life of 12 hours with additional battery VGP-BPSC24 is the Sony Vaio SVS13112EN. Full power Ivybridge Core i5 and Intel HD4000 IGP. You can get it for 52k locally and if you want 12 hours battery life spend 9.7k for the sheet battery so 52 + 9.7 = 61.5k. Without the sheet battery you would get 5-6 hours.

No SSD though in it, and Lenovo has 32GB SSD for bootup. You won't get any ultrabook/.notebook with SSD under 60k.

Cheapest with 128GB SSD is HP Folio 13 ultrabook. It costs 66k.

Your best bet is SVT13113EN : T Series : VAIOâ„¢ Laptop & Computer : Sony India. But frankly, this is not worth the price. Instead if you can compromise a bit of performance then have a look at in.asus.com/Notebooks/Superior_Mobility/U32U/ . I own this and believe that this beats tha vaio hands down if VFM is considered. What do you loose is a bit of performance due to slow processor, but sufficient enough to fulfill you dad's purpose. It fails only if heavy multi tasking is done which papa's generally don't do :P. You also loose 150gm of weight (1.6 vs 1.76), but that's just a point to say, not worth considering. What you gain is 20k savings (this is huuuge), plus 7hrs of battery back up vs 4.5hrs; Build quality is good enough to persuade you; Looks no less beautiful.

+1 to randomuser111's suggestion if you're ready to shell out that much. I missed it :p

Ahh How is the HP Folio Book? Reviews seem decent but what about support from HP India? The Lenovo U310 seems VFM. I'll also look at the U410 though the dedicated graphics card just seems like a gimmick. I will stick away from Vaio's. Dad had one earlier and mom has one right now. They don't seem to like them one bit.

Nah, he actually does need something powerful. Since he has intentions of using it for 3+ years, buying something with good performance right now should serve him well.

dafreaking in my suggestion go with this few laptop for your DAD.

Lenovo Ideapad U Series U410 (59-332849) Laptop Grey

Lenovo Ideapad U Series U410 (59-332849) Laptop: Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Lenovo Ultrabook

This laptop have 32GB SSD and 500GB HDD 5400RPM, But it also have graphic card and the battery life is 3hours.
The price of this laptop is Rs.55688/- and it's available in flipkart.

Under consideration. Thanks.

That was his initial choice. At that time a friend was bringing it down from abroad so he was getting it for 66K (approx) at 72K it is imho not worth the extra money. Let's see though if he still wants it. What i meant by does not have a delete key is that the mac just has a delete key (which works more like a backspace key) He has been using windows/dos machines for over 20 years. So he is used to those keys. I know some might find it a small reason, but for him it is quite significant.
