Host your own blog? Wordpress or something else?

I'm thinking about starting my own blog mostly about .Net programming and the web. I have been reading a lot about it and would prefer paid hosting and to have my own blog rather than use free blogging services like blogger. If anyone can let me know of good hosts which cost max Rs 500/- per month I would appreciate it.

Also, there is a lot of info on Wordpress as the preferred blogging engine. It would be good to know of what you guys think of it and perhaps offer some good alternatives if they exist. Please provide your opinions and advice.

For only Blogging Wordpress is the best. nothing beats it.

With wordpress you have two options
1) A blog hosted on wordpress.com . You get a subdomain. But no css editing possible and charges are steep for dns management (for using your own domain) but no need of hosting.
2) Download and install wordpress on your hosting account. All customizations can be done by you. Can use your own domain.

I assume you want to go with the second option.

For hosting if you have a CC then you can get hosting from hostgator.com/arvixe . Cannot go wrong with either.

If CC is not available the you will need to look for some host ehich accepts payment in rupees and for that you have hostgator.in (Rs. 320/month for monthly, for yearly it comes to Rs. 252/month)
I use hosting from whost.in . (Rs. 200/month) (I use it for my portfolio and blog, but do not have much visitors as I am kinda busy and hence haven't really got to promoting them).
But you cannot go wrong with hostgator.in. Even whost.in has served me well for last 4-5 months.

Also you will need a domain.
Again if you have CC go for namcheap.
Else
You can get from bigrock.in (using bigrock for my domain, no issues whatsoever)

Thanks techygeek for the detailed post. Wordpress sounds like the best way to go. I have a CC and online payment is OK.

I've been thinking over the last few days and decided that I would like to go with ASP.Net hosting, as I would not only host a blog but maybe host some .net tech demos/pages which I could not do on a Linux host.

Hostgator does not appear to have Windows hosting but Arvixe does. Also, there are a lot of hosting options on Microsoft's site but I could use some help to know the reliable ones:
Windows Web Hosting Gallery

Hostgator does have windows hosting at Windows Hosting - Shared Windows ASP Web Hosting

I haven't used windows hosting much (Only once for a client and that too for a day max).
But cannot go wrong with hostgator. (They are good enough for personal sites)

I had a look at the microsoft gallery.
Names weren't quite familiar. maybe coz I haven't really searched for it.

But I did find arvixe on page 3.

I use arvixe for a project.(my client owns it) and I am very happy with it. I run Drupal on it which is more resource hungry than wordpress. So should be fine for you too. But yes this was Linux hosting.

The reviews at the microsoft page might be of help. Though i always believe that most of the bad reviews are because people don't know how to use the features properly.
Again I had no problems with arvixe (the Linux one)

And also cannot go wrong with hostgator.

Maybe you can have a chat with the support online and clarify any doubts.

Also try going for a monthly or quarterly plan for the first time. The yearly, bi-yearly prices are good but then for the first time take a monthly plan if possibe.

Hope that helps.

He has not mentioned multiple domains.

But yes multiple domains is costly from hostgator. Did not see that.

Also another option is that Arvixe has unlimited domain hosting from $8

You Might have Good Experiences with such hosts. I am not Denying it. Generally, I don't Recommend such Hosts.

I used arvixe because it was one of the top recommended hosts at drupal.org for drupal.
And If it runs drupal fine then wordpress will surely run fine.

And I was satisfied with them (their Linux Hosting).
