And it was a happy co incidence that while we were discussing such movies.. this article appeared: Rs 100 cr scale has lowered focus on film's quality: Farooq - Times Of India
He might be one of the TE members :P. You never know.

All aside, I think we have bashed Rohit Shetty enough. Why not talk about "Michael Bay." He has a template (close to Rohit) ie lots and lots of explosion with minimal story. He has been trashed by many critics and general public alike. Still makes 100s millions of dollars. Transformers 3 was no masterpiece still made a BILLION dollars on a 290 million budget. Still people are against him making the TMNT live adaptation. Speaks volumes about his work

Everyone has bashed him but I do like his The Rock, Transformers (only the first, I haven't seen other two), and The Island which had a nice concept even though the execution was rather bland.

i for one dont care how much money movies make , i love watching movies that help me while my time ...mindless comedy ,action , thought provoking , i dont care what genre it is...

ofcourse i dont pay to watch them so i really am not bothered i guess

Imo, Dev.D is one of the greatest films ever made anywhere.
I had never ever in my life seen any movie receive a standing ovation in a theater hall. Didn't think these sort of things actually happened in India.

Until Dev.D. The entire front row stood up at the end for a round of applause.
And this was in a low class neighborhood multiplex.

Also, have you guys ever noticed how they tend to make children act in Indian movies and soaps ? It's almost as though they're retarded and overly simple.
 Now that you mentioned it, it's all I'll ever see.
Indeed children in Indian soaps do seem retarded or suffering from some sort of diminished mental capacity.

.
Maybe they clapped because movie got over.Joking
I think there are many movies mother India,mughaleazam,many...latest being munnabhai series and 3 Idiots which are epic than Devd .its from just another journa.

Those are plot based movies right.
Dev.D was total emosanal vomit. It was taking a vision from paper to screen - the downward spiral of Dev - and as such it was exceptional.

AK is known to make good use of soundtracks in his movies but he really outdid himself with Dev.D. Simply perfect use of soundtrack and choreography throughout (Twilight Players were f'in incredible).

For The Dark Knight Rises as well. And for Inception on all the three viewings.

Probably because, "finally over". DKR and Inception were not worth standing ovations after they ended. Could not even understand what Bane was saying. And Inception was over-hyped mind-F, which was just not fair.

With all due respect, that is your opinion which differs from the opinion of the people who gave standing ovation.

I stopped watching bollywood movies around 2 yrs back.Forget the movies..these over the top action and the noisy "comedy" in the trailers itself irritate me...I restrict myself to sitcoms and documentaries these days..I somehow think all these 100 cr ...90cr..80 Cr in one week collections is just a gimmick to turn black money to white money...I never seeing producers/distributors openly talking about profits around 10 yrs back..looks like a new trend this..

I was surprised when I was watching Megamind - Megamind (2010) - IMDb and there were resounding claps in 2 scenes near the climax of the movie.

I was so surprised since -

1. It was an animated movie
2. They were some really witty lines, which the audience understood (gasp!)
3. I'm in India (no disrespect)

So, good movies transcend everything else...

What is there to be SO surprised..?
1) Animation movies have found a niche of their own. They are brilliantly conceived and designed. Voice acting has been a revelation with them.
Clearly different than cartoon movies.
2) Indian audience do understand jokes..apparent and implied.
'Wheli' and Chatterbox crowd culture be cast aside, i dont think the Indian audience is oblivious to the jokes and punchlines used in foreign cultures.

I guess the discussion can be concluded as - the movies made are a reflection of what the audience deserves. If the majority of audience are willing to watch the crap fests, then what is there to stop the film makers from making it? Those who really want to do quality cinema will find a way to do it, but the response of the audience will dictate whether that type of cinema keeps being made or not.

This thread reminds me of that 'English hate' thread. When I diss Bollywood movies, some people think that I am some obnoxious prick.

It can be true too. There is actually one of my friend who doesn't like any Bollywood movie, even though he hasn't seen all of them. Bollywood, as a majority sucks, but there are good movies too.

Not generalising Indian audiences. Put the gun down! :P

I have had the bad luck of being with audiences that didn't. My personal experience, not speaking in general.

When I say Bollywood(I hate this word), it refers to the culture of making crappy movies without an ounce of originality. For me Race 2, Dabangg are Bollywood movies while Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur are Hindi movies.
