Why all the hate for local brands?

Guys what is the reason that I don't see any local brand recommendations on TE? I have seen my friend's lava iris 504q and I think its not much inferior to the samsung galaxy s3, the screen was crisp clear with HD display. I know the cameras are not very good and also there are updates issue but these are good vfm phones for basic usage given the price range from 8 to 13k. What are the cons of these phones? Do shed some light. Thanks.

Reliability, for one. Some last a few days, some a few weeks/months, a select few last for years.
ASS. Not many of these local brands (read None) have a good, reliable, trained after sale service network.
Quality control.. Or rather, a lack of it. Not sure how much radiation you are exposed to.

Logistopath has summarized it all :) +1 to his post, and OP if you want the phone for some basic operation and strictly on the budget then only its good to opt for a local brand else stay away from it. If you don't find much difference between Samsung Galaxy S3 and Lava 504Q then you should recheck both of them.

Hate is not misdirected always.

These phones lack in some department or the other, normally more than one. And build quality and ass are the main issues .

Micromax Canvas HD price fell from 17k to 12k in 2-3 months.

One of my friend upgraded his canvas 2 to latest jelly bean...Reputed companies hardly release any upgrades ..:p

I have not used any smart phone except samsung till date. I own note 2 now. yesterday i was shocked to see the build quality of canvas HD and some karbonn model(cost around 6000.). Both have better build quality than galaxy S .,S3 and note 2 for sure.

I see build quality being mentioned a lot when it comes to phones. But i am not sure how to say a phone is of good or bad build quality.
Like just by touching or something ?

I like to speak in points so...

1. Speaking of build quality, how many falls will a phone armed with gorilla glass stand(say from 3-4ft) before it finally breaks?

2. What does it mean when someone says that a phone has poor touch? Is it the consistency? Amount of pressure needed? Accuracy? My theory is that the touch quality shouldn't matter if you are gonna use only one phone for the majority of the time. Once you get used to the touch, you'll know "how much" to touch.
I've been using Nokia 5530's resistive touchscreen for 3+ years now. When i have to use a phone with a capacitive touch, i have to control myself from poking the shit out of the screen. But i believe when i get a capacitive phone, ill get used to it in a week or so.

3. If i were to compare mediatek's quad core with snapdragon/qualcomm's dual core, by what margin would the former beat the latter? Is there a noticeable gap?

Service is really a pain for the local brands. We purchased two smart phones one for me and other for my friend in a deal. Mine went dead in 3 months. Friend's phone still working fine.

I took it to the authorized service center and that guy said, they will send it to Banglore and from there it needs to be repaired and then will send it back. He claimed at least 21 days for it. I submitted the phone. after a week I got a call from the local office guy that the phone got rejected as it was damaged with water. I am pretty sure that they simply said this to avoid the RMA ( It was actually a dead set. Went off when charging in progress). I told them, "I am pretty sure that you are telling this Cock and Bull story just to avoid an expensive RMA to the company. If you do not repair it, I will write this story up in all the online technical portals and make sure no one will buy your products."

Then the answer was "Ok, Sir , I just wanted to check if it was damaged by water.I will let my superior know about this and we will try to get it repaired"

After a long wait for a month, I got my phone repaired.

Guys this may be little exaggerated but i too feel they are top notch. Using nexus still think the same..
We are paying way extra to get brand name.

May be my wording is confusing but all these micromax , Xolo(Especially Xolo Q800),Karbonn high end phones has build quality better than Samsung devices. of course i am comparing a 10k phone with 30k phone. After all i don't want to pay 20 k pay more just for the brand.

My point is these Indian brands doesn't deserve any hatred. When VFM is considered these phones beat crap out of the most of the branded phones.

The only problem with these local brands might be reliability.

Tricky question, depends how it falls, face first, side impact or back. Then there is the point of impact which is random. You may survive a face fall and have problems with the back. I don't think any phone is certified to survive a drop. Drop tests are pure entertainment, its not possible to say anything meaningful with a sample size of just one. So people go in for cases, to protect the sides and lips to protect the front. As a side bezel replacement is labour intensive and invariably requires lifting the screen off.

From what i can tell build quality is more to do with how it 'feels' in your hand and your 'impression' how it will survive daily wear & tear. People go on about aluminium shells >> plastic and how nice they look but they scuff & scratch easy and can be expensive or difficult to replace.

What looks or feels good does not necessarily translate into longevity. Plastic wins there hands down.

Its to do with the tier 2 or even tier 3 touchscreens used. Inconsistent touch in certain areas. And this is a real lottery, you might get a model that works very welll or one that does not. tier2 or tier 3 have less rigorous testing or quality standards and are cheaper. Can't buy this online, you need to inspect the product and test it properly before paying. In effect do your own QA. If you are used to buying from the grey market then this is the same. Better be familiar with the service codes of the phone you want to buy so you can run your own test in the shop.

3. If i were to compare mediatek's quad core with snapdragon/qualcomm's dual core, by what margin would the former beat the latter? Is there a noticeable gap?
Depends on what its used for. Stress testing will show its not just the CPU but also the memory and how smoothly the bit shifting ensemble works.

tier-1, is tier1 for all components, except maybe cameras.
tier-2, is potluck for all components with even tier-3 added for more aggressive pricing.

In short you do not know what you are getting. The specs and price may be attractive but the experience is mixed, and even among users of the same devices inconsistent. 3rd party development is also slight to non-existent except for certain models of which its tricky to tell. You get the device for cheaper for a reason, the company only commits to support you for the OS it came with, any further updates are uncertain. Maybe or not.

Given the long service times, it goes without saying you need two phones to be able to ensure that you will have a phone at all times. You need this even with tier-1 but its essential with anything less.

^Nice joke. I'm rofl.

I agree with him. There is something definitely lacking about the build quality of Samsung phones (I am talking about the S2, S3 and the Note 2-my main phone).

Good question

The way I see build quality, it is not about the size or shape of the phone (that is ergonomics). It is the tolerances, behaviour of buttons, etc. For example the volume buttons on the Note 2 are a bit fiddly. The power button does not consistently spring back to the most extended position. The back cover does not fit flush with the phone. Even when closed, pressing in some areas produces squeaky sounds. The press-to-release mechanisms for the sim card and microSD card are difficult to operate. Even the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS have a better push to release mechanism. Small things, but they add up. Another good test I think would be to give two phones to someone who is not very into smart phones and ask them which is more expensive. Given a Note 2 and a Lumia 920, I know which one my mother is going to pick.

Weight wise both are similar. Price wise depends when you cmpare the price, note 2 was more expensive when it opened but is now cheaper than the 920.

The 920 is built like a tank no doubt about it. Nokia has a different philosophy when it comes to building phones.

But give a choice between that and say a S4 which is 50gm lighter (~30% lighter) with a bigger screen and see which one people prefer just on handling. Can always add a case and there are lots of options.

How would something like this change your perception about build quality ?

Is it a bird, is it a plane, no its an iphone :D
