how is it that movies encoded in mp4 format look better than ones in mkv format? the 2gb & 4gb mp4 ones beat even the 16gb mkv ones in terms of video quality. they have more vivid & balanced colors, are brighter & have better contrast. mkv movies (even the 15+ gb ones i have seen) are duller & many have a yellowish tint to it.
the apple trailers are the best in terms of PQ. some of them seem to even "glisten" but you dont get rips in that format, right?

i'm speaking of the ones which have blu-ray as source.

i can understand if some mkv rips didnt look as good as mp4 but i've found this across the board whoever the encoder is

Then something is seriously wrong with your eyes or with the codecs installed in your system.
Mkv and mp4 both are just containers like vivek said. In short, you can remove the audio and video from mp4 or mkv and put it in mkv or mp4 without loss is quality.
If you find difference in same file then no one can help.

well do not depend on others rips.

try to rip a blue ray yourself.

rip a blu ray source and make a rip of exactly the same file size and do the analysis.

The only difference between mkv and mp4 container is mp4 cannot handle 5.1 DTS + Audio, there is no difference in visual quality you can convert any mkv to mp4 or mp4 to mkv using mkvmerge to see the difference.
