TomTom, a popular navigation service provider has finally released its Android navigation app for India which is now available in Play Store.

Unlike other applications, TomTom works offline and stores the maps in smartphones, so there is no need of data connection while you navigate. The app is supported on smartphones running Android 2.2 or higher and with resolution 800x480 or more.

Features -
  • TomTom Offline Maps. Maps are stored on your smartphone – so you can plan a new route, get re-routed, or search for points of interest. Without needing data coverage.
  • FREE Lifetime Maps. Always drive with the latest map and get to your destination faster. Download 4 or more full updates every year for the life of your app.
  • IQ Routes. The fastest routes, the most accurate and reliable arrival times at all times of day.
  • Landmark Navigation. Wherever you need to be, search for the nearest landmark and let TomTom show you the route.
  • Mapcode support. The middle of nowhere no longer exists. Drive to any destination within meters using its mapcode. For more info see http://www.mapcode.com
  • - Advanced Lane Guidance. Gives you extra clarity when navigating difficult junctions. Merge, exit and change lanes with confidence.
  • Spoken Street Names. Helping you to keep your eyes on the road, spoken instructions now include street names, to make turnings even clearer.
  • Multitasking support. Clear turn-by-turn guidance while on the phone.
  • Seamless Integration. Integrates easily with your Android smartphone contacts.

The TomTop app is available for Rs 2050 on Play Store here.

Interesting. Maybe that's why sometime ago Sygic started giving discounts for India app; lowest being 172 bucks.

they should have a demo period of a week or so.. just for us to understand what we are getting into...
to be honest, google maps is still the best, sygic for 172 is also a waste in front of the google maps app!

People buy Sygic only for its offline capability. Try using Google maps in the middle of nowhere with zero connectivity and Sygic wins hands down.

Tom Tom is always reliable.. But for an app i guess its over priced.

The thing is, if they sell you the device along with maps, then most people feel justified paying it but only as app, since it is software we feel it is overpriced. Cannot blame you, it is normal mentality for all of us. But nevertheless i have used TomTom (outside the country) and they are very reliable and their updates don't involve updating all maps together, only pieces so it lets us know when update is available and downloads it which might be few kbs of MBs most of the time.
Spoken street names is a boon but probably useless in India as in most cases street names are hidden behind some trees or some ad banner. I feel we need better banners to identify streets in India.

Offline maps are accurate but don't offer as many POis as say Google maps.

Sygic maps at 300 bucks offers much better bang for buck. Sygic makes the maps for Map my India which many consider the best for India.

how do these offline maps work and are they acurate?

The GPS chip on your phone locates the geostationary satellites and i think 3 satellites minimum are required to pinpoint your location with accuracy upto few meters. This is pure GPS and if you used older phones like Nokia 5800, 5230, there you could actually see (IIRC) how many satellites spotted and such information.

In A-GPS (A-Assisted), the phone along with the GPS chip uses different things like internet (GPRS,Edge,3G,Wifi) and even the cellular tower triangulation to get your location faster. That is the reason the location is acquired faster in AGPS.

Best free map is Nokia Maps. Saved my ass like a 100 times, especially during night driving.
Google maps was useless when there was no internet and believe me, when you drive in the interiors, you would know what i mean.
