Audio Random DAC/Amp Thread!!

You need a credit card, and it's not 13,000, ...mine came to only 11,700 including Rs. 70 for octroi, and the forex charge by the credit card company. While I'm a fan of Pristine Note's excellent service, the price benefit in this case is hard to ignore.
Any views on which headphones match well with the X3? Surprisingly, I'm getting better results with the 32 ohm M-50 than with the 50 ohm HD 558. Any other full size headphones under 20k you guys could recommended?

I am also looking for a good headphone to go with the X3. Leaning towards the M50 right now. For me, I have now way to try them out before buying, so I am depending on you guys for feedback.

Cheers!

There are so many choices for HPs upto 20k it all depends what you expect from an headphone , anyhow, I am going to suggest Fidelio X1 it seems to be best all rounder among that price range from reviews - Bass with soundstage (very hard to find combo)

Sorry, my mistake...its actually 13k, I got mine for under 12k only due to the Xmas discount . .

Doc, the M-50 sounds mighty on the X3. Full bodied bass and thoroughly engaging sound. I can hear more delicate sounds and get a better soundstage on the HD 558 though it's less fun. Too easy going.
It may make more sense to try out a higher impedance set of headphones than these, to take advantage of the amp.

Order Placed with the help of a member here.Big Thanks to him.
Waiting for Fiio X3.:)
I will sell the Brainwavz R3 and go for Shure Se215 or Hifiman RE 400.

re400 is balanced and very smooth while se215 is bass heavy

We were wondering that how many would be interested in HiFiMan HM-700 if we would import it in India?

I was intrigued. ClieOS had this to say regarding the competition:

But with other headphone, I think they are roughly equal, with X3 being my favorite because it drivers most headphone very well. DX50 on the other hand only sound great with thicker sounding headphone (to counter its own thinness). HM700 isn't bad, but non-balanced headphone don't really benefit from HM700 greatest advantage of having a balanced headphone-out.

The X3 might be the better all-rounder with the HM700 besting it only when a balanced phone comes into play. Cheaper too as HiFiman do not sell the player separately.
Probably a good choice for someone interested in the "HM700+RE400B combo". But if HiFiman do give us the option, I doubt the price will dip below 200$.

That said, if I didn't already have my RE400, I'd put a vote in. :)

Well as per clieOS, the AMP section of HiFiMan HM700 is better than both DX50 and FiiO X3 but the DAC section is not as quite good as compared to DX50 and X3. He also said that just for driving RE400, it will beat X3 and DX50 but for other headphones the result can be mixed. The amp section is fully balanced, similar to that of HM901 with the balanced amp module.

Guys my Brainwavz R3 that came bundled with the Fiio X3 went one sided :(. I have initiated a claim returns, should get a replacement soon. In the meantime, I am looking for an IEM with a tad more bass. Tight budget 1.2K, Thanks in advance.

FiiO X5 seems very interesting based on first impressions. It's SQ out of HO seems good enough. UI and usability has some kinks, but I hope that by the time it is released, a few of them could be fixed. Looking forward to it as long as I am not stone-broke by that time.

@PristineNote,

Any plans to bring X5 to India?

Guys who own (or know about) the Fiio X3.

How do I go about connecting it to my Denon AVR in USB Dac mode?

PC>>>> Fiio X3 USB DAC >>>>> Denon AVR.

Here is a picture of the Denon's input connectors.

Analog connections (red) use the normal RCA type red and white.
Digital (green) use 1) Optical 2) Coax RCA type.

Where can I get an appropriate cable for this?

Thanks in advance guys.

I thought you wanted to use X3 as your DAC via Line out.

But, if you are using PC -> USB -> X3 -> Coax Out -> Denon Coax In, then you are trying to use X3 as a USB -> Coax converter? I don't think X3's DAC comes into play if you use it like this.

In that case, you need something like

Mini to Toslink cable: http://www.ebay.in/itm/SPDIF-TOSLINK-TO-MINI-PLUG-OPTICAL-AUDIO-CABLE-MINIPLUG-/360840510289
Mini to Toslink Converter (http://www.ebay.in/itm/Optical-Mini-Plug-to-Toslink-Adapter-Converter-/360138380214) + Toslink Cable

I couldn't find Mini to Coaxial cables.

Thanks. I am also not sure if the X3's DAC can work with the digital out. Any one tried this?

Edit: I think yes, you are right.

1) To use as USB DAC, digital to Analogue - should be 3.5 to RCA.
2) To use as a simple source to plug into Denon AVR - can use the Toslink cable.

Do correct me if I am wrong.

@Doc Holliday,

Sorry! I missed reading your edited post till now. Yes! You are right. Hope you have tried using them as planned. How are the results?

Finally, High end DAPs are becoming a reality. Evolving from pricey, brick sized, terrible usability thingies, we now have Sony ZX1 and Calyx M which seem to tick the right boxes. I am still looking at FiiO X5 due to it's affordable price point. Based on the short reviews so far, it at least seems to get the sound and basic UI right, though many things are still hoped to be fixed by the time it gets released in March. I would probably get them in April/May, finances allowing.

ZX1 may be a great choice if it drops a bit in price. The build quality and UI seem to be very good and the sound seems to be pretty neutral with a slight treble tilt as well. But some issues like not pairing with all DACs may need to be ironed out. It doesn't support DSD yet, but I have not even upgraded to 24/96, so that's the least of my worries.

Calyx seems to be keeping close tabs on the head-fi thread. I like how they are changing the product even at this late stage of development. With a full SD slot, a microSD slot, support for DSD, good UI, lowered output impedance - fantastic feature set. I will still wait for reviews to see if they deliver fully on the promise. At this point, I am more inclined towards Calyx M than ZX1, though I cannot afford either of them for a few months at least.
