Wouldn't getting a modded PS3 be a better idea or buying used games for the PS3? After all between the 2 consoles the PS3 had better exclusives.
 
I have a modded ps3 , though it is having some problems at the moment , i would be getting it repaired tommrow
I was looking at xbox for kinect only
 
Odd how did I miss that part. Guess a 360 then makes perfect sense... wait no not really if it is only for kinect.

Btw what sort of problems in the ps3?
 
When i switch on the ps3 it starts up to the starting screen then goes off and starts again itself and then again the same happens and this cycle continues

My hdd is also ok as last night i tried running the ps3 it worked i even played 2 games of fifa 13 but then once i tried to switch it off and on again the same problem occured
I am taking it to palika bazar today to get it repaired problem is i feel that they overcharge you with stuff like this cause we dont know what the problem is but they do anyway i dont have much options
Ill also ask for the price of xbox might be cheaper there[DOUBLEPOST=1386256995][/DOUBLEPOST]I went to palika today for ps3 repair that will take 2-3 days
also xbox 360 4gb+ kinect bundle - 23k i think he should go down 1-2k if i bargain or atleast do the jtag for free
said 1200 for jtag
Also he said i wont loose waranty he'll do it in such a way but i dont beleive him

Guys, one of my folks is traveling from US and he is willing to bring a PS3 for me. Being a noob to console gaming I wanted some help from this community. I have a few question and hope this awesome community would help me with the decision making.

1. Is buying a 12gb PS3 version and later upgrading with a 500gb HDD makes sense or Should I go for the 500gb version of it? Also since this is my first console I am thinking of purchasing a new one rather than a pre-owned console.
2. I seem to have missed out on the Thanksgiving and Christmas PS3 bundle sale, can any one point me to some good deals available now.
3. I am not too much into multi-player games, mainly because I have never played it. How good is online multiplayer game in India and do we need a high speed broadband for this?
4. Would I be able to play games without being connected to the internet?
5. I like to play racing games like NFS & GT and also like games like HL2, Max payne. Should I get the games from US or here, Used or New?
6. How about warranty, will I get any warranty in India?
7. Does it make sense to buy PS3 from US at all or should I save some more and get it from here?

I have few queries regarding PS3. Before starting I would like to give some background on my preferences. Till now I am gaming on PC with my favourite genre being FPS - read COD, BF, etc. However I play only SP campaigns. Now I thinking to change to console and thinking to first get a PS3. My queries are as follows;

How reliable are PS3 ? I mean activities involved for repairing due to some or other issues like stopped working/will go in reboot loop, etc.
How good is PSN service ? in terms of Good titles availability
Can I use keyboard + Mouse for FPS, IF at all I am not comfortable with the controller ?

I am inclined towards getting a pre-owned/used 12GB version and putting 2.5" 500GB HDD which I am using as an external.

It's a very sturdy console, especially the latter Slim models which came out. Mine has been going strong for 4 years now. Gannu's 80GB version is still rocking, if I'm not mistaken. In the event that it does fail, you can either get it replaced from Sony with a new one for half the price OR get it fixed locally (assuming the issue can be fixed).

I haven't been on PSN for a very long time now. Quixy can fill you in on this. But from what I've heard, it's extremely reliable and the range of titles are quite extensive. My advice; go for PSN+. It offers a host of titles for free download every month and doesn't cost a bomb either.

You can, but I'm not sure how efficient it will be. Some games won't be very responsive to mouse and keyboard like they feel on a PC. Trust me, you'll get used to the controller.

I'm bad at predicting costs Pradeep. Since it's out of warranty and a year old, I'd say around 15k would be a good price. Also depends on the condition and any titles are being provided with it.
 
@vyral_143 - I guess @Ethan_Hunt has answered most of your queries. I will add my thoughts on PSN and Keyboard + Mouse.

PSN as a service is free and you can play most of your games online for free. The 2 conditions that apply here are -
1. Some games include codes, not a problem if you are buying a new game but on a used copy you will have to buy the code unless it is an EA game as they have dropped the requirement of codes a while back
2. Sony can close servers i.e., kill the multiplayer support. It happened on the Resistance series and there was some talk about that happening to Gran Turismo 5 as well. I tried GT 5 2 weeks back and it was still up. Haven't tried any of the Resistance games in a while.
So if you have a decent connection around 1 mbps you should be fine. Please Note GT5 works well with 512 kbps but Resistance 3 used to hang and reset the PS3.

Keyboard + Mouse -
Keyboard and Mouse work on the PS3 but not in games. I have tried it, it doesn't work.
Aiming with the Analog sticks will take some time getting used to but hang in there for the first couple of hours.
There are 2 thing that help out here -
In most games you really don't have to be very precise and provide ammo like garbage.
Some games offer auto lock feature. Some do it very subtly providing some assist. I know as a gamer you want to go gung ho and do it yourself and you can by bumping up the difficulty.

PSN or PSN+?
PSN+ definitely. Apart from games given out monthly for the fee of a single new title for your console. It stupidly also gives you games for consoles that you don't own. I used to this for Vita and then when I bought the Vita I downloaded the games that I bought months before getting a Vita. I am doing the same thing for PS4 now and I don't have a PS4 :p
PSN+ also gives you full games with a certain time limit. The time limit is of course short enough so that you can't do a speed run.
PSN+ also gives you some discount.
PSN+ also gives you 1 GB of online storage which is helpful as it allows you to backup game saves on it.

PS3 also allows you to...
You can download and transfer files from your PC so you have a backup of it and need not re-download every game.
This helps considering at times downloads on PS3 gets corrupted or certain games pause download if you are signed into your PSN account.
If you have a few friends who also own a PS3 then you can all download and share the games providedyo u have all bought them or got them free from PSN+
Thus you can back up and build a collection of virtual purchases.

NOTE - PSN+ online storage or the PS3 itself has an odd bug. When you select multiple files or all then some saved games are greyed out and don't get uploaded. I found this day before yesterday. I was syncing my saved games and saw that Vanquish was amiss. Then found out a few other games like Star Ocean and Driver SF also had similar problem. For such games copy 1 saved game at a time.

@vyral_143 - The time limit demos from PSN are a definite doozy and I think one will barely attempt to download one of these unless you seriously plan to buy it if you like the demo. Let me explain.

There are 4 types of demos on PSN -
Normal Demo - The usual demo with 1 or 2 levels for the user to evaluate before making a purchase.
Deadline Demo - (Sorry this is best name I could come up with for such demos) These demos are like normal demo but only work till a certain date and time. A recent example is Gran Turismo 6.
Trial & Unlock - This demo contains the full game but limits the user's choices and levels. If like what you see then you can purchase the game and the remainder of the game will be available to you. Example Limbo, Galaga Legions DX etc.,
Time Limit Demo - Like Trial & Unlock Demos this allows you to download the full game. You have a time limit though and at first it starts in full glory but as time goes on different things can happen. Games can either stop until you purchase the game or add limitations to what you can do or not allow you to proceed to the next level. The reason I say you won't go for it is, the games in this category are games like GTA 4, Assassins Creed, Darksiders etc., These games are huge in size and one would rather watch a bunch of reviews or ask around before purchasing one of these games. Download a huge demo is a definite no-go thanks to Indian ISPs FUP and the superfast Indian internet.

With the demo bit taken care of lets proceed to PSN download management via PC -

Sony has no official software or method to do this.
There is a software called PS3 Proxy server that allows you to do this.
In the following post I have provided the guide in Chip Magazine and the software.
There were some issues that some faced while following the tutorial and some that I faced but solutions for it have been given in the following posts.
Post 189 on page 10 is pretty important because there is a chance that you will land up making the mistakes I made and download the same thing over and over in a loop.
^ Sorry for making this part a bit too brief but it is something you will understand as you proceed. In case you have any issues you can let me know.

Let me know if you have any doubts.

Note - PS3 Proxy server has a PSP mode which awkwardly works with the Vita.

Anyways I would like to say go for psn+ subscription you wont regret it. Sometimes they do give you awesome games for free which means 12gb version won't suffice unless you plan to download>play>delete.
However one downside (If you like multiplayer) is the point prabs has mentioned in his point no 2. For promoting the (early rushed for idiots) ps4 they can do such things.

Yes they do. Even SSDs do. Boot time reduces by a few seconds and games load a bit faster.
