Getting Mechanical Engg. Job

Hello everyone,

I have recently graduated as Mechanical Engineer from Government Engineering College, Jabalpur. Have been good in my academics too with a degree of 81%

However, due to all stories about slowdown in manufacturing and blah blah, I have no core company job in my hand. While checking Career and Employment thread I realized many are on same boat as mine.

Now, I have the main query on how to get a Mechanical Engineering related Job.

  • In campus placement, only two core companies came. One hired none and other took 5 and didnt selected me. And by now option of campus selection is eliminated.
  • Have registered in sites like Naukri.com Shine.com etc, however no fruitful result. All I get is calls and mail from some HR consultancy agencies offering job in metros for 10k per month.
  • Also gets spam mails and calls from various firms who are ready to offer me good job if I deposit xyz thousands in their account.
So, how exactly should I hunt for a core company job without getting in frauds and all???

PS: Have got placed in TCS and IBM through college campus. If couldnt succeed in getting core job, which should be opted??

Thanx :)

Same Ashvary from jjmehta photography forum i hope?

Congrats on passing! Have no idea about ur queries though :p

P.S: how about wedding candid photographer? Some of my friends quit mba's to do it..

Do not fall in this deposit XYZ trap. Most times spam is the only what we get in return after creating profile on job portals.

IMO, from personal experience, best bet for you in getting job is by referral. Look around if you have friends/relatives who are in such companies like Godrej, ask them to forward your resume/CV to HR. Atleast you might get some genuine calls for interviews.

Good luck and best wishes :)

i have no idea about the core companies.

But having worked with both TCS and IBM, if I had to chose between them would have picked TCS.
TCS has better hikes, better onsite in general compared to IBM. Work culture for most parts is better in IBM though.

Both are equally average companies. Pick the one with more pay wrt to placement location.
Cool.. Thanx for info.

Yeah, I am away from deposit scam.
Unfortunately, I dont have any contact working in core companies. Barely any relative is associate in this field and my college seniors etc also didnt succeed much to break the ice. :(

You worked as fresher.?? As told by many both of them give barely any hike for first two years. Is this true?

No. I didnt join either as a fresher. But hikes are low in the initial year.
If you really are looking to join either of them, then from my perspective, the only important thing that matters is that getting into a good project where you can get to lear as many fresher are on the bench for the initial year.

But how can we initially discover which company would offer better opportunity of project?

that is something hard to predict and is not consistent.

But as you are palced via campus, check with your senior what was the technology these guys were put into and other info.
while they might be indicative, you cant count on them to assure yourself that ok, this will be good for me.

I have seen many people opting for the company that gives earlier joining as project is simply based on luck.

@ashvarybabul
first of all congrats !!

coming to your question about core companies, first decide if you are willing to live away from metro cities as mfg plants or power plant aka core sectors are situated for away, i am working in a power plant so i know how difficult it is !!
still if you are ready, you can definitely opt for GATE and use that score to get thorugh any of the PSUs like NTPC or BHEL or oil companies which have recruitment drives which consider your GATE score.

Personally, i would prefer TCS being an indian MNC with support and ethics of TATAs, it would be really beneficial and as far as hikes are considered, in initial years you should rather be least bothered about hikes but the projects that you ll get to work on.

Make your choice and all the best !!

1. Why are you particularly interested in "core job"? Keep in mind a BTech/BE etc degree is just a primary cut off criteria. In your job, you will realize that even 12th pass person can perform well and progress. Branch matters mostly when you are into R&D kind of profile.
2. Also note, that most of the manufacturing type of companies actually do not prefer freshers. They want people with at least few years of experience in the same field. They are not willing to spend time and money to train you. There are a few companies that do come hunting to the campuses for GETs. Its kind of hard to get into the GET profile from outside means (like naukri/monster)
3. Don't fall prey to any agency asking for a deposit. They are going to make money on your profile.
4. Try linkdin (to get contacts in the "core job" companies.
5. As rightly mentioned by swapyworld.29872 - manufacturing sector means living at places less developed than even villages. No fancy stuff, no night life, no girls around :p. Money also is quite tight (the industry is capital intensive and hence owners not willing to part away with their monies) and the increments and bonus follow the industry cycles (ups and downs).

Thanx for the guidance.. I will take insights from the seniors :)

Thanxx for the assistance dude..
Yeah, I am aware of the working environment in core companies, I did two training during my BE and experienced that myself. However, for the career sake, I am ready to do it.
GATE is a very good option, however competition for PSU there is damn high.. This time Mech cutoff went insane, ppl getting 65 marks have 1000+ rank and got no call from PSUs..
Honestly speaking I doubt on ownself, whether I would be able to get in top 200 in next GATE

Thanx for detailed reply dude,

1. By core job I meant branch i.e. Mechanical oriented job so that I can actually work on field and things I studies for past 4 yrs.
2. Yeah, I observed it.. But does that mean I wont be able to find one?? :(
3. Totally away from these scams.
4. Yeah, following linkedin regularly. But no good opportunity for GET discovered yet
5. Yeah, aware of it,all sorts of pain there. But willing to stay in stream so that its good if I opt for MS etc in future.

1. By core job I meant branch i.e. Mechanical oriented job so that I can actually work on field and things I studies for past 4 yrs.
This could be the WORST possible reason for wanting to take up a "branch job".
You could've wasted your 4 years learning a technology which is in its sunset years.
Doesn't mean that you base your next 40 years of life on it.

Also if you are looking out for MS, I would advise you to not dillydally and apply right away. In my experience, in general, you will have nothing in your job profile that would seem attractive to a US university looking for MS or PhD students (unless you join an R&D lab). The case is not like MBA institutes, where they seek experience because the freshers are too naive in their approach to life (like a fresher when asked where does he see himself in 5 years would most probably answer entrepreneur, CEO, Prime Minister etc).
