Hi.

Yea. A Noobie here.

What all things can be done with a dedicated server space? Can I do a mail server? So that I can use <myname>@<myname>.com mail id in public? Can I host my own website? Perhaps like a personal photo sharing platform?

Any other usages?

Thanks.

Yes you can host your own Mail Server, Web Server, FTP Server, DNS Server etc.

You could host your own Personal Blog, Website etc.

Well it's more like a PC to you which you have in a remote location. So whatever you can do with a PC is just almost possible here..!! :)

The main thing is, if it's unmanaged then you have to configure it all and you'll be responsible for everything you mess up (Security, Configuration etc.) :P Though the Server Admin guys will be there to help you.

But for Managed servers, you just order them and they will configure it for you.

Its just a dedicated server. I have to setup everything.

Can you or anyone give some guides how to setup Mail server and a website?

CPU: Intel Core i3-530 2.93 GHz + IPMI
Memory: 4GB
HDD: 2x 1TB HW RAID 0
Operating System: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 64 Bit

Is the configuration.

If its in EU, you could make it a seedbox.
Or Game Server
- Mail Server
- VPN if provider allows
- Mine BitCoins
- Sell space and Earn.

It Depends on the provider.

Config seems good. Most probably its a VPS than a server, right? Anyways, how much it costs you yearly?

I would suggest you to learn about securing it first. Google for these terms and learn how to:

Disable password based login
Disable root login
Fail2ban
Denyhosts

These should be enough. Secondly, running your own mail server is PITA. You will most probably end up on a guide about installing and configuring Postfix, which is not at all easy. This is 2014 and still running a own mail server is not easy. makes me sad.

However, if its only for development purposes, then go ahead ;-)

PS: don't leave any admin/config pages online or open to public. for eg. if you install phpMyAdmin, it should only accessible to you and not anybody else. For this you configure your server to accept requests only from your IP or your IP range.

Its a dedicated one. Not VPS. Monthly 28USD.

About the rest of the things. I need to check.

Also, can someone tell me what are the advantages of having my own VPN installed/configured in this machine?.
if some of the sites are blocked in your country or you want to do some stuff keeping your location data private you can use the vpn. i.e., when ever you use vpn and open google, google will think that you are located at the server's location instead of your house address.

In some European countries downloading pirated stuff results warnings from isps. they use vpn for that purpose.

heck, if you keep your identity anonymous while purchasing the vps, you can even use it for mail spamming and botnet activities.
