Xiaomi Redmi 1S goes on sale on Flipkart for Rs. 5999

One question, Sorry if OT - Few posts earlier, i see people saying the phone has some "memory/RAM" related issues. So even though it has 1GB RAM, its still a problem? Is it worth buying it considering cost - to - problem factor?
Well, quite a few people are facing issues. But there's another section that says the experience is absolutely smooth. There's also some others who found things improved with f/w updates.
There's another thread here about problems & fixes for the 1s. So you could see that for your research.
All in all, one is taking a calculated risk with the 1s. On the one hand you know there are issues, but on the other you also know that updates are being provided regularly. Also, besides the official updates, you also know that the community will be somewhat active since the 1s is popular.
The h/w is great for this price point. It's probably just a question of whether xiaomi can get the s/w fixed on time. HTH.

PS- Maybe @zibalingz can give us an update about his situation.

There is a pure android rom now available from a xiaomi official for the mi3 (with official kernel and stuff). Xiaomi might be releasing the vanilla android rom for mi3 soon.

I hope they soon release a stock android rom for the Redmi 1s too , for all the people who dont like MIUI.

Yes, It has some RAM leaking problem but nothing major (No lags) which will be rectified in next updates hopefully, it is definitely worth buying for its price. No Mobile comes near to it in this price range. The best VFM ATM.

Finally my cousin and I got the time to co-ordinate, and I just finished setting up his RedMi and transferring all his contacts from his Ace Duos. First impressions - this is bloody amazing. At this price, it is more than VFM. Absolutely in love with it.

So, I finally decided to use my phone that I got a week back from the first sale (wasn't sure whether to open it or not :D). But guys let me know which particular application(s) (related to MI cloud/backup/tracking) I need to remove? Don't want these sneaky Chinese to have all my data/contacts that easily. :android: Haven't inserted the sim or connected to WiFi yet.

Also, I checked, it is on 34.0 version. Is there any better (not just newer) version that I should upgrade it to or should I wait for some other stable version which is in development right now?

Hey there, sorry I was away for a while but here are some updated impressions regarding the RAM issue -

You can only open 9 or have 9 apps open at any given time - WTF?!?
The 10th app you open will replace the 9th app.
It automatically closes or kills the 9th app in order to make room for the 10th one.

The RAM level with 9 apps open will dip below 100 mb! the memory circle glows red when you get really low and that's when you
should say goodbye to any music or media player app, it will auto crash, close or kill it at this point.

The RAM available on boot is 400 MB+
Even if no apps are opened on a fresh boot, over time the ram will go down to the 250 mb+ level
and it will not recover to the original 400 mb+ at boot.

Apps will constantly restart in the Background even after force closing them through the task manager.

Lastly MIUI is a big RAM hog, It alone probably requires over 300 mb to run. I really wish there was a stock android version available to flash onto the device. (even jellybean would do)

Now onto solutions and other issues -

- Fix ram issue temporarily by using "minfreemanager" (root required)
set mild or aggressive profile
Can go as low as 50-60 mb!, no crashes
But significant slow downs in apps like Chrome and Facebook.

- CPU speed makes no difference, I say the faster the better, People only have issues with the CPU speed cuz the phone got hot and under-clocking solves the issue.
I didn't personally feel the phone gets too hot, maybe lukewarm to warm but not hot.
Default OC'd CPU speed has no negative impact on Apps and general performance.

- Proximity sensor is slow to respond, takes 2-3 seconds to switch screen back on not sure of HW or SW issue.
- Low volume on earpiece and speaker, also earphones, apparently can be fixed by some tweaking in DEV mode.
- Screen quality is great, video playback of a HD file is excellent, but default HW decoding can cause stutters, so use SW decoding (option in MX player)
- Battery life is decent, not great, barely lasts a day with moderate use.
- Signal & call quality - Signal can be easily lost when you cup the lower part phone in the palm of your hand edge to edge, maybe a case will solve this issue.
Call quality suffers due to bad placement of the earpiece at the top edge of the phone, which leaves the top of your ear exposed and allows background noise to filter in.

So at the end of the day, this phone is by no means a bad device, it has some great hardware power packed into it, but its brought down by software like MIUI and other useless unoptimized software which I wish they would fix soon.
This phone has potential, it can do everything you want but sooner or later you will run into performance issues which will leave you frustrated. It needs some concrete fixes not just by the community but by Xiaomi itself.

You can't expect much from a 6k phone, and everyone is surprised including myself on how well this thing performs but I wish it could do better, I'm sure it can it just that the unoptimized software drags it downs massively!

if there's anything more you need to know, feel free to ask.

Cheers!

Hey thanks for the detailed review. I'm still on the fence over this one & have until midnight to decide. Was keen on the Zenfones but seems the battery performance is abysmal. The only safe budget option seems to be the Moto G which is, of course, double the price.
Well, guess I'll bite the bullet 'cuz beggars can't be choosers. Hopefully since I'm not a power user (I'm upgrading from a Nokia 5130c, :)), I won't feel there are any issues. Wish me luck!

Redmi 1S I have received is not showing any wifi network (even adding the available network manually didnt work). Have tried upgrading to the available upgrade (stable) version, still wifi is not working :(

This time only got 3 phones.
Order placed for prime, imtiaz786 and Rave.:)

I saw some reviews of the Asus Zenfones on YouTube, I think for the price they look pretty bland and performance is just about average, there is really nothing separating these sub 10K devices on the market atm, Lets see if the Redmi Note which is going to be 10K will be any different.

But if you want my honest opinion before the Redmi 1S came out the Moto E was probably the best phone for 7K on the market, now you have Android One devices which will pretty much render the Moto E obsolete.

From what I've seen of the Moto G 2nd Gen other than its unimpressive specs bump over the last year's model, its still a more quality device then anything else at sub 15k price point
You get a bigger screen, 16 gigs, sd card slot, dual sim, Android L upgrade etc etc and most importantly no bloated UI or software to hamper the phone''s performance.
That is what I like about LG and Motorola they make pure android phones and they work very well.

So if you go for the Moto G 2nd gen I'm sure you'll be a happy camper, unless you can get your hands on a MI3 but then again you'll be falling into the bloated world of MIUI.
