Laptops What should I do with my Macbook Pro's cracked display?

Have a Macbook Pro 2017 15 inch with a display cracked from the inside. Tried getting Apple to replace it under staingate issue but they say if there's accidental damage it's not eligible. What do I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated order display assembly from AliExpress? Or just sell it? If so, for how much? Where can I get a dead 2017 MBP to salvage the display? Apple wants 85k for the replacement and honestly that's just ridiculous.

Try from local shop. I faced the same issue some 5 years back and my bro got it replaced in Canada for some 10k inr

Else, import the display and fix it

Visit grant road in Mumbai, you may find broken mbp which can be used

Thanks a lot for replying.
I know beggars can't be choosers but local shops are asking 45k for a duplicate screen... It seems very risky...

What about taxes if I import the display? Indian customs is known to be notorious when it comes to customs duties... Please let me know if there's some information I don't know.

Wow I didn't know they sold broken electronics there... But I can't travel to Mumbai as of now... Are there any online options for this?

How can the display be cracked from inside ie no visible external signs, and be accidental damage? I think they will try to find a way to blame the customer for it - fight it out.

I did everything I could man. Talked to several Advisors, even called the US Apple Care. They don't wanna do shit :((( I guess Indian customers are just cash cows for Apple, horrible service experience. The display is just weak and cracked on its own due to keyboard keys pressure or something... Many people have experienced this. They just wanna make everything thin but don't realise that they're also making everything weak.

Is the laptop in warranty? Ask them for a mail with the details. Also take as many pics as possible. There should not be any dent or equivalent on the screen panel/back cover or so. Take pics with screen ON and OFF. If the key pressure has caused damage, ask them to show where it has cracked the screen.

Additionally, put everything in writing. Take it to consumer court next.

As for the thin thing - why did you buy the damn piece? I too had an option of a Macbook from office, took a Dell workhorse which can have the parts changed on the fly without much fuss. Earlier Apple was known for their build quality. Now its cannot be worth of that.

I'm done dealing with Apple and these AASPs. I filed a case on consumerhelpline.gov.in... but I don't know what to do next I guess we just have to wait...

No option other than to get replaced locally. I had my MBP from 2007 till last year. Display cracked once due to my mistake and got it replaced in US at cheaper price

Since you don't have accidental damage coverage, no one will replace it buddy unless it is a part of recall, be it apple or any other brand

I see... Well, thanks for your time :)

I am posting our conversation over PM here for visibility and so it may help anyone else with this question in the future

Would appreciate any help or advice you may have. It's a nightmare.I have a MBP 2017 15" with a cracked LCD. Do you know where I can find a dead MBP to salvage the display? Or I'm also open to any advice you may have

My Reply
I repair stuff as a hobby, so would not necessarily have the best advise -

In any case, I would recommend that you not focus too much effort in finding a dead MBP as it can be very difficult and time consuming to do so. Nothing like it if you find one at a good price though!

I would normally recommend picking up the screen via aliexpress or ifixit. Below is a link I found - Pls check compatibility of the parts before ordering as I am just going off the limited information you have provided. Also note that Local Post (China Post, Singapore Post, India Post, GATI etc) seems to be very backed up and parcels are stuck for many over 3 months now. DHL & UPS seem to be working at normal speeds but will attract duty. ~45%

Hope it helps! And sorry to hear about your broken Laptop, specially during a pandemic.

Best,
y2s

P.S. - Apple is not going to honor any claims as there is accidental damage as per them. I have had the same fight with them before. You are right, Apple support in India is quite awful! This incident will be documented in their systems against your serial number so there is no use in going to a different service provider. I believe what is above is going to be the cheapest option.

Another option can be to just get a monitor and connect that if mobility isnt a big factor right now

Found a cheaper used option

Apple service is horrible even in Europe. It is slightly better in US if you have Apple care. All the crap uploaded in Youtube about free replacements etc. are either paid or outright lies. As a former slave of Apple and it`s ecosystem, I can tell you one thing, get rid of the laptop ( sell it with the damaged screen) if the repair costs you more than 15k and stop using Macs/iOS.
If you desperately depend on some software (it was LPX for me, and honestly it is the best DAW by far) try to find a similar software in Windows and learn it.
I know this post is of zero help to you right now, but I sincerely think people outside US should stop buying Apple products completely.
