Why TVs are so expensive in India?

If anyone is interested. Was trying to figure out why TVs are so expensive in India.. Why we don't have models like H8G in good price.. You can buy 50in H8G for 429$ (30k, which is what the common chep 50in TV would be last month)

First theres 28% GST on sizes greater than 32in. So that maybe 20% more, don't know how much US takes tax? Moreover India govt takes 20% on Fully assembled TV imported into India 'to encourage Make in India'. So that's why the higher end models are so costly. There's also a 5% tax on panel imported by itself 'to enhance Make in India', so even India made ones should be costlier. So the pricier ones would be around 40% or so pricier at least.. 'Made in India' ones would also be around 25% costlier, which would come close to price of TVs in last month, and price of the Samsung TUE60 which seems to be made in India. Anyway LED season prices seemed to have increased by 20% too https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/b...s-could-rise-by-20-35-in-october-5837581.html (or they inflated it) and they will like fall in Q1 2020

One good thing(unless it affects quality, which it might) is Samsung is starting assembly in India for all products under 75" https://economictimes.indiatimes.co...ia-from-dec/articleshow/78500101.cms?from=mdr . Don't know about others. So hopefully we can get good quality TVs next year with more make here, at least at 20% more than the US prices

Not just tvs, everything is more expensive because of the insanely high taxes. The govt. increased taxes from ~14% to 28% in a very short period of time. And if people don't realise that the govt. is there to serve them, not the other way around, it will just keep getting worse.

Almost all branded electronic item/ gadgets are significantly more expensive in India. However India has ( esp Amazon/ FK) some strange brands of almost everything that's inexpensive.

I've never ever heard of brands like Boat / Bolt audio and similar brands in the audio world outside India. Even Edifier was a new brand to me. I've never seen any Edifier speaker anywhere!! ( trust me, I've seen a lot in the audio world)

Things were not this weird even in 2014.

Because there are also plently of cheapos who will buy any crap quality products as long as it's cheap. BOAT etc. is cheap and produces sound out of the hole at the end. That's enough for most people.

But wasn't Vat in addition to exise duty there before, we now have just GST granted electronics alteast computers used to be at 5 or 6% vat.
But even in US every store applies state taxes now and thanks to trump even customs. yet the greedy companies, distributors in India wants to overcharge.
Even in automobiles, I remember buying a Innova for around 7lakh or so in 2006, now there is no way I would pay the current asking price for the new innova. Yet the prices in the US havent increased by the nearly 200% increase we had in india on all car segments, this was before gst came into effect.

I don't know how you want to break it down, but just look at the tax stats of the previous govt. and look at the current percentages. Extreme increase. Even before gst they were ripping us off right from 2014-15 itself.

I don't deny the taxes are higher compared to pre 2014, even if its in the maximum slab of 28% thats not enough of the reason why companies and distributors are charging ridiculous prices in india. Perfect example was the innova its was too expensive even before the bjp came into power.

Congrats you've unlocked the first step towards realizing that the government's job is to steal, too bad it took high prices of your favorite tool of distraction to begin to realize, when you dig deeper you'll realize you're almost a slave lol.
This government in particular will talk about record GST collections but never specify where it's being spent and when they do it's totally unbelievable. Recent example being, they said that they had spent thousands of crores go give free foodgrains for 80 crore people for 5 months during the lockdown.
They keep increasing taxes under the pretext that most people do not pay taxes yet we are taxed indirectly on every level yet receive nothing in return, ever.

Lol, televisions.

It's said that the downfall of the Morarji Desai govt. after they won because people were absolutely sick of Indira's emergency etc. was because he decided to control gold. You don't f*ck with people's gold.

Today, of course it's something else materialistic like TVs...

They messed with fuel pricing updates so much that people don't even know how much it costs anymore. Confuse the hell out of them is their game now. Crooked crooks.

Speaking about GST collection, why is it so hard for them to give GST refunds back to the states and have to borrow that amount instead? Where has all the money gone?

A friend told me today when we were discussing about cooking gas, that there's no subsidy on gas. Where is all the money they've saved on not giving cooking gas subsidy to the people, gone? Questions no one bothers asking.

People actually justified the increase on that other thread by saying that it's to make up for lost tax revenue and it helped in discouraging people from moving about during the lockdown, that too when oil prices had cratered due to low demand. Guess what ? lockdowns are over but prices stayed where they were because people have the attention span of a goldfish.

I think it's actually gone up rather than just staying the same.

And our masters are experts in distracting people with religious issues, temple/mosque, china (without actually doing jack about it), sushant, everything except the really important issues that matter.

Though it's about a different commodity than the topic at hand, i thought this was a very well written article. Gives some insight into the often faulty logic of taxation.

Still the Computer part prices seem at least ok. The Nehru Place prices are quite cheaper than for Processors, MB is about equal, and GPU is same old like before. Don't know how TV prices used to be before. The interesting part here is how the compounding goes on

I understand Indian govt taxes a lot, just TV seemed more than usual and too much to buy. And with panel prices likely falling and companies assembling in India, there's hope that the prices will reduce next year.
Just something aside - I would be ok if the monies govt take give good visible benefit, but forget about things like good bus/track here(Chennai), we have to deal with sewer bubbling and garbage. Yeah I know its under municipality but quite sad huh..

You can get good TV's in the market, just have to search. Toshiba U7980 is a H8G rebrand with Full Array Local dimming and 700 nits brightness for 47k (55 inch).
Is that really H8G? Have doubt as they'd likely advertise QLED to Moon. It would have been pretty good buy because it seemed to have been around 44k and 41k with discounts, now OOS

You must realise that taxation is so high because of evasion. We are bringing this on to ourselves by not wanting to pay taxes and yet enjoying tax exemptions.

You cannot have your cake and eat it too, at least not salaried people. Professionals like doctors and lawyers meanwhile can deal mostly in cash, severely under-declare taxes and also enjoy luxury goods at inflated prices.

Govt is getting its taxes directly or indirectly. But we don't get the same work in return because of corruption. So really tax isn't being evaded but
it keeps increasing because corruption and people who have a share of it keeps growing.

Every consumer electronic is more expensive in India (cuz taxes) barring mobile phones. But TVs have actually gotten cheaper over the last couple of years.
