Budget 41-50k Building a NAS (Unraid)

pguy

Disciple
So I am finally abandoning both my Synology systems for lack of support + hardware replacement. I am looking to build a NAS box that can hold 8 - 10 drives. Main goals will be to stream, store data from cameras, work as a backup server for the rest of the machines at home. Run some VMs/nodes as the need arises. I am looking to keep all 8 drives. I want to do a ground-up build, so will be buying everything new except the drives

  1. What is your budget?
    • 40K
  2. What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)
    • 4 x 4 TB Drives
    • 4 x 8 TB Drives
  3. Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)
    • Both above sets of drives
    • (please mention the rest in above format)
  4. Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.
    • Looking for suggestions on CPU and Mobo. Will need 8+ Sata connections. Not looking for too many features, but more for reliability
    • A good power supply that can manage 8 - 10 drives
    • A NAS type case, like the Fractal Node 804 (not available at primeabgb currently)
    • 32 GB RAM
  5. Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component
    • Might add drives. Convert some 4TB to 8TBs. But will keep the 4TBs as well
  6. Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)
    • Mumbai
    • Open to online purchase
  7. Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market
    • Yes
  8. What is your intended use for this PC/hardware
    • Download rig, 24x7 operation
    • Watching HD movies
    • VMs
    • Nodes
    • Reliable storage. Should be able to lose 2 drives and still work
  9. Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.
    • Nope
  10. If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?
    • NA
  11. What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage
    1. NA
  12. Are you looking to overclock?
    • NA
  13. Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?
    • Unraid

Get used HBA card for HDD (LSI-9211-8i) i think there is a 16 port version as well flash it to IT Mode and intel NIC for network your choice whether you want 10 gig or quad 1 gig nic or whatever you like ,first gen ryzen or even 2 gen 2700 would be solid and for streaming acceleration gpus could be used but than you need to specify what will be used plex etc because NVidia have disabled multiple concurrent streaming on GeForce cards software locked (could be unlocked on certain platforms) and on Quadro cards its unlocked so you need to plan it

Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K3 from primeABGB - 11600 - has 10 SATA ports and couple of M.2 ports
AMD 3400G from Vedant or mdcomputers - 13900 - 4 core, 8 thread and had onboard graphics so that you don't need to buy a graphics card. Might help with transcoding.
Crucial 16GB DDR4-2666 Mhz from amazon- 4700 Each - cheapest 16GB DDR4. Buy 2 now, 2 later if required
Antec NE550M from PrimeABGB - 4150 - Seems modular and has 6 SATA power connectors
Some Molex to SATA adapters - 300 Rs for 5 from amazon
Case - I had a NZXT source elite 210 case on sale sometime back. Ask its buyer if they are willing to part with a profit. - 8 3.5" and 3 5.5" drive bays

it might be just me but I would not want to put all my eggs in one basket, I would not want 1 PC that has all my storage drives, I would split them up into 2 systems one backing up the other for redundancy.

OT: You can also look at the used market, I recently bought an HP Z240 SSF Workstation for 20k with Intel Xeon E3-1225 V5 & 16GB DDR4 RAM, it can fit 4 HDD's, I also bought Seagate 4TB Enterprise 7200rpm drives used for 4.5k each. going to do Windows Server 2019 > Storage spaces.

my suggestion for AMD was for higher cores ,If 4C8T is required than go intel any of the used pc`s out there would do the job ,buying x370 board would be risky even if its in warranty as in RMA they might even give you and upgraded board maybe x470 with lesser sata ports

Yep, I have a Ryzen 2400G, MSI B450 Tomahawk and 8Gb x 2 Gskill Ripjaws that I am looking to offload. Will create a sale thread tomorrow.

All above parts are in warranty.

having split system defeats the purpose of nas and economically not great .

BTW the server you bought ,do they sell spares like used HBA and NIC`s ?

I would have suggested an x470 but it would not have fit his 40k budget. Have to go a couple couple of generation old hardware in that budget. I don't think any consumer Intel boards have 8 SATA ports. He may have to go server route

pretty much get any standard board you can, it doesn't even matter how many SATA ports it has, then buy a server-grade Raid Controller that can take up to 8 SAS or SATA. or get 2 raid controller.

I recommend you go with a mobo that supports ECC memory and opt for that. Is extremely useful for NAS/Backup purposes. I think the 4350g is perfect for your choice, as it is a "pro" cpu and has official ECC support.

Once I use Unraid, do I also need Raid controllers? Most of Unraid seems to be a non standard RAID setup, but that setup seems OK to me.

You do not require the hardware functionality of the RAID controller, but you can use the controllers to give you the required SAS/SATA ports on your motherboard of choice.

As i mentioned the LSI raid card , it will give you multiple ports , generally it works a as raid controller but by changing the firmware i.e it changes the mode you could use it like normal sata ports LSI
