Nvidia to Make CPU, Going After Intel

it depends whether modern day application would migrate to ARM architectures .With this announcement Linux community / Apple will have its tail up .And Microsoft will have to start thinking

Microsoft is already well underway with arm support... expect windows 10X release later this year with a Qualcomm cpu I believe.

Nvidia is not chasing fastest single core from the very beginning, unless that changed in recent times I don't think they can even touch Intel/Apple CPU market. AMD maybe yes..

irrespective of their pricing Nvidia has actually delivered and no one can deny it. they will have a target audience or customers which is AI/ML for cinema video editing ,gaming industry .they would like to change the whole landscape of computing . One interesting thing i always had is why is no one attempting to create a program for file compression using GPU.

data centers don’t care much about single core performance. its all about total cost of ownership.

There is already some type of competition here like mellanox bluefield (oops mellanox got acquired by nvidia) and qlogic (acquired by marvell) octeon.

that is why amd’s acquisition of xilinx is important too.

going to be very exciting.

you have to understand block and stream compression algorithms and you will see that its is not easy to parallelize compression. zlib finds all the unique blocks and replaces them with indexes. like how color palettes work in gif/png files.
for example if you have ABCDEFGH as data, it is not possible to compress AB and CD parallel. i mean it doesn’t give good compression ratio.

I guess Data Centers relies more on quantity rather then quality, use case is very similar to GPU rather than CPU.

On a side note I heard Nvidia owns ARM, don't know if its true but if true then yes, Qualcomm needs to worry.

well were you under rocks ,when they announced the deal there were ripples through the hw industry ,the Uk gov got involved and are still may be contemplating that should they allow this deal to happen.

AMD has only managed to get 7% market share in the server market while it increased its market share to over 80% in laptops and desktops. With the chip shortage, Intel will cash in even more with its own foundries. It will not change any time soon mainly because corporates have long-term deals with Intel.

Having said so, the fastest supercomputer is ARM-based. It will take time but may be ARM might have a double-digit market share in the server space by the end of this decade.

NVIDIA is going to have a strong reputation going in to this too, which will be worth something when a CEO asks lead tech nerd who to go with for their new widget.

Actually intel could be a force to reckon with. Their Mobileye platform is very exciting. https://www.mobileye.com/
Very impressive ,a lidar on SoC.Intel is still the top .

But nvidia too is very impressive. Especially the Jetson nano if someone properly uses it or community develops it.

I think one could easily pull of a Honda E like dash using Jetson nano use it as dash cam .media center and what not .
